Recording problem.. Please try: does this happen with yours?
I thought I had a hardware problem with my X3i microphone, because whenever I'd try to record a voice note, the playback was mostly hissing and my voice was barely audible (basically it seemed to record *almost* nothing). This was happening consistently... and I have my microphone gain set high & volume high, with the default audio quality settings (8k 8bit mono), so I would think it should work fine.
A Soft reset didn't help, but a Hard reset seemed to... so I tried to narrow down what might've been causing the problem. Anyway, I narrowed it down to my Settings -> Sounds & Notif, and when I have the "Enable sounds for... Programs" UNchecked, this is when my voice recorder doesn't work. When I check it (enable), it seems to work fine. Also, if I record a note with it unchecked and subsequently check it, it still doesn't play the clip back properly (so it's a problem with recording, not playback).
I'd love to know if this behavior occurs on other people's X3i's (in which case it seems like a bug), otherwise I must have some sort of bizarre hardware (or ROM?) problem... in which case it's time to call Dell (ARGH!)... thanks for your help!!!
