microsoft portrait

wow, finally got it running, its brill, only tried it so far using my pc (laptop) and my axim..

i was wondering, will i be able to have a voice conversation with another person on their pc, (myself on my axim X3i wi-fi) even if they dont have portrait on thier pc, but they have msn messenger, ie, does it work the same, or does the other pc also need portrait installing on it.(i'm a bit confused).

any help please, on face value it looks a great application, why didnt microsoft just build voice conversation into the pocket pc 2003 msn, or is that a stupid question.

any help welcome please, thanks all..smedley..uk.

I think they need to use MSP but i have looked at so many of these things that i am lost now. I am able to you MSP through my LAN connection but when i connect outside my network with my x3i i can't seem to connect. On their FAQ page it says when PPCs can only work when the PC calls the x3i and stuff like that so that might be a problem when you do it with your friend, you will have to check that out.

If you don't care about video then i would use Xten Free World Dail up. I just installed it on my X3i and PC and another friends PC last night and it works great. We were able to call each other and were accually talking for about an hour on this thing. The voice quality is great and there is just alittle bit of lag. One thing i noticed is that my X3i has such a great mic compared to my pc. I have to be like 5 inches away from my PC mic to hear fine but with my X3i it can be like 2ft away. BTW, this program is freeware for both the PC and PPC software.

thanx for that HighTymes, not bothered about video at all, basically all i'm trying to do is use my axim like you would use messenger with voice so i can use it to talk when i see my buddies come on line..pity msn for the ppc doesnt just have it built in like the windows version..

so i presume the other pc needs xten installing as well to be able to use it then.?

I have not tried Portrait myself - yet - but IIRC from the web site you can initiate a voice conversation with an MSN Messenger buddy and it will alert them (with a link, I think) that they need to install Portrait for Windows in order to participate.

Hi High Tymes,

Can you explain what xten free world does ? Will it allow two people with 3xi's to talk with each other through an adhoc connection or do they have to be on the "internet" to connect to each other ?

thanks,

sylvestor.

If I connect to a Wireless LAN with my x3i and try to use MSP over the internet thru a Broadband connection, will it work?

(Because the website doesn't say if it works with Wireless, only LAN.)

Yes, MSP is will work over WIFI. I have it installed on my X3i and my Dad put in on his Desktop and we can "talk" (VOIP) just fine, wireless and all. The only thing that I did was to change my Dlink setup and put my AXIM's IP address as a DMZ -
(D-Link 614+ - 802.11b)
I don't know for sure it was required - but have not had a lot of time to do the research to figure out what ports to forward. I also have not tried it yet on a WIFI outside my house (starbucks) so see if it work at any WIFI place.

The free version can only do one on one talking over the internet. The pro version allows you to connect up 8 people in one conversation. Whoever you want to talk to they have to have xten as well, be it the other person on a x3i or pc. I am not sure if you can use it like a walkie talkie between pdas without accessing the internet to send the data.
