if you look at the shots in the x3 review (here bottom of page)
you will see you can see the battery, it is specially made for the X3 and replacments are availible. You also can get extras for long trips
Ummmmmmm.........grentz..........he's asking about the backup battery. Not easily replaceable, as to do so would mean opening the case and voiding the warranty. Although, buy the time you might need to replace it, warranty would be long gone.
I would imagine it's a proprietary design and not something you could just get from a battery supplier. Of course, it could also be a simple Rechargeable "Coin Type" LiIon Battery, too. But opening the case would still void your warranty.
I've never seen inside an X3.......anybody got any links to some "insider" pix?

I don't even see anything that even vaguely resembles a battery. I've got a few suspicions, but whatever. or wherever, the back-up battery is, you're not gonna go down to RadioShack and pick one up.
Thanks, Mr. Mysterious, for the link.

"the X5 seems to have a removable batt."
Yes, the X5 has a replaceable back-up battery, accessible through a (sometimes easily) removeable cover, on the back of the device, which some have trouble getting back into place.
"also, i cant even see any case screws, even if i did (which i dont think i will be doing) wanted to open it up..where are they as well."
More often than not, (at least) a few case screws are "hidden" under stickers or feet, in such a way that if you tamper with them it will void your warranty.

As for the battery type, it's NiMH. Check the manual, all devices are required to list hazardous materials. If you read your owners manual it lists LiIon and NiMH as the two batteries in use. We know the removeable bat. is LiIon, so the little bat. inside is NiMH. Also, if you look at the charging circuit, it's not built to handle a LiIon battery (too simple, not enough protections). The battery is the little green thing at the bottom of the device connected by two wires (red and black) to the mainboard. It is not proprietary, you could definately find one to fit. Since it plugs into the mainboard, as opposed to being soldered on, you would definately be able to replace it. As is stated above, the chances of having to replace it are extremely slim.
I have two Dell Axim X5 (both the 300 and 400 versions) and just received my new X3 400 today. I have it charging, and it had turned green showing fully charged. I turned it on in the cradle and it says the backup battery is extremely low (as evidenced by the fact when I check battery status it shows text stating low instead of the graph normally shown). I lifted it off the cradle after fully charged searching for the battery similar to what the X5 has and could not find it. I noticed when I placed it back on the cradle the orange light has lit again and is charging for a significant period of time, hopefully charging the internal battery. The manual does not even mention the backup battery anywhere that I can see. I find that aspect of the manual lacking.
