active sync through internet via vpn connection problem.

I am having a problem with AS over the internet via vpn.

I can connect with vpn but when I start AS it starts the connecting on the desktop and the ppc but does not sync and then I get the Critical Communications services have failed to start. Try resetting the mobile device, and reconnect.

I am assuming that I must have something set up incorrectly or as I see others are able to do this.

I have seen this issue on this message board but have yet to find a solution. I have been trying to get this to work for days and I never get any closer to a resolution. No help from DELL as they just pass you back and forth saying you need to talk to wireless and wireless says talk to PDA support and then they tell me to contact Microsoft and MS tells me to call dell. They got me in a loop to no avail.

So now I ask of you members of this site to PLEASE help me out if you can.

I can connect wirelessly at work and sync with this machine with no problem at all. It works great. Also obviously it will connect via USB as well with no problems.

Here is the Hardware I have:

Axim X3 Pocket PC 2003.
I have the pchosts setup with the address of the pc I want to connect to via vpn.
SD Wifi SanDisk
Linksys WAP 11 ( at home and at work) These set behind the firewalls.
Fire wall dlink DI707 at work and DI 704 at home.
I have set the DMZ on both routers/firewalls to the PC and PPC so as to not run into any problems with the ports being blocked.

Windows server running SBS 4.5 win nt 4
client machine winxp pro AS ver 3.7

Internal add on my work lan is 10.0.0.x subnet 255.255.255.0
home LAN is 192.168.0.x subnet 255.255.255.0

When the pc connects to vpn on the winxp machine it assigns an add to the vpn client (ppc) of 10.0.0.187 with a DFgateway of 10.0.0.68. and a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0.

I have tried to ping the winxp machine from the ppc and I get a reply but I cant ping any other machine on the network nor can I browse any network shares.

I don't know if I have given enough info. I am kinda new to this.

any help would be appreciated.

Do you have basic TCP/IP connectivity through the VPN? ie can you ping hosts at the other end of the VPN tunnel?

Have you managed to do an AS sync via (say) wireless when on the LAN (ie not via the VPN)?

Yes I can sync inside the lan with no problems at all. Connect right away and finishes very quickley. When I try it through the VPN It takes a while before the vpn computer detects that the ppc want to sync and then the green wheel spins and spins and then I get the critical comm error.

Any suggestions?
