Question X3i has become quite sluggish....

Hi all,

Well in my excitement at getting my X3i, I installed loads of programs and games to test them out and decide which ones I wanted to keep.

Now, I've pretty much loaded down the internal memory, and the Ax has become pretty sluggish, so I have a few (random) questions:

1. Roughly how much program memory is it good to keep aside out of the 64 ?

2. If I install programs onto an SD card, will it cause any problems when using the Ax while not having the card inserted (obviously excluding programs that try to run at startup)? (I doubt there will be, but I did recall having some problems with apps on my E115 when installed to CF cards.)

3. Do most people run their Ax in "Auto" mode or "Max Performance"?

4. Any freeware apps that clean those annoying leftover files from uninstalled apps?

5. What programs do people usually install into their BIS? (I'm pretty sure I have a few of the popular apps, and I just want an idea of which ones I should install into BIS)

I'm planning on making a list of Apps and Games that I've decided to keep, and then do a hard reset and just install those. Hopefully that should free up a lot of wasted space. I've not started using the PIM features, so there's nothing to backup yet.

Thanks in advance for any help

How many soft resets have you been doing? You might need a program called Check Notifications. As every soft reset leaves stuff behind. This program gets rid of that junk.

I've done a few soft resets (probably under 10 in the past 2 days) .... but I've already read about Check Notifications and used it.

When I say sluggish, I mean that when set to "auto" mode, it's not as responsive as it was when I got it 2 days ago. The only program that I've installed that runs "all the time" is wisbar 1.4, but that's about it.

Anyone like to share what they think is a good amount of program memory to have set aside?

Thanks

Also, on the topic of notificiations. I'm guessing it's not a good idea to remove those other 'system' ones that CheckNotifications displays but doesn't remove itself?

As much as possible?!!!

Put everything you can on the SD Card, however.....WisBar is not a good candidate for the Card.

Also try cleaning your caches by using SpeedClean

Thanks for the tip MrKlaatu.

I know that everyone will have a different answer, but I just need a rough idea so that I don't make the mistake of overloading again. 20mb allocated should be fine, right?

As I'm not sure if you're new to PPCs or not....

Have you been actually closing the programs, or just hitting the "X" in the upper-right corner?

The "X" does not close the program, but simply minimizes it. Dell includes the "Switcher Bar" program (in Settings) that you can use to actually close programs that are still running. This can also be done via many other software like Icbar, Wisbar, etc.

Jordan, thanks for the tip.

No, I'm not new to PPC (I've got a Casio E115 running PPC2000), so I knew about the programs not closing. I was using switcher bar, and yesterday installed wisbar.

Is AOL IM safe to install to the BIS? As long as it doesn't create any sort of log files that would cause undue write cycles it should be ok.

I have loaded up my Axim with a bunch of programs in the Built-In Memory, but not main Memory. For main memory i have 35 megs and sometimes more free. But one thing though, I was doing a lot of installing, uninstalling, and rebooting on the Axim. Now it feels kind of sluggish. Is there a simple way to know if my system is being burned with wasted files? And is there an all out extreme-procedure in which to wipe out all installed programs and start anew?

I install all my stuff on BIS unless it is required to go on main memory to run(ie. TodatPlus) or is a program that constantly modifies files in the program. Download a program called remover. You can check lots of areas in which memory is being wasted. Try to keep as much RAM free as you can so your x3i runs faster. Regking is a great app too that will modify some of your register to speed things up.

Thanks all for the replies and suggestions.

I installed almost everything on the BIS, and it's running better now. (about 25mb free program memory)

Hi all..

I'm getting confused. What is the difference on the RAM and Program memory? Are they the same?

My X3i feels sluggish as well (due to installing & uninstalling softwares). from the battery info on Wisbar advance. If it reads Main Memory 80%. does that mean Programming memory is low?
Also anyways that I can keep the Main Memory lower?

Thank you in advance.

Dell's Specification.

RAM Memory - 64MB SDRAM
ROM Memory - 64MB Intel StrataFlash® ROM

Basically, in the memory utility (Start -> Settings), you can assign different amounts of the RAM (64mb in your case) between "program" memory and storage memory.

Storage memory is used to install programs in the RAM. While program memory is used when programs are running.

I hope that clears it up a bit, I'm sure someone else has a better explanation.

Your explanation was quite.......... good boy, Odie....Good Boy!!.....however, keep in mind that Unka Bill will decide for you what HE thinks is best in 5 or 10 minutes, and reset it to what he thinks you should have.
