Correct, the backup battery is not activated until the first time you turn on your X3. So when you stick it on the charger, hit the power button to turn on the X3 which will activate the backup battery. Then do not go through setup and stuff, just hit the power button again to turn off the X3. Leave it on the charger for around 4 hours, and both batteries should be charged.

Yup - they really mean it about that four hour charge - it conditions the battery to give it the maximum charge value that it then uses to stop charging when you charge it in future so MAKE SURE ABSOLUTELY TO CHARGE FOR AT LEAST FOUR HOURS....

(can you tell I didn't leave it the full four hours? ;) i'm somewhat suspicious that my battery life is less than it should be because of this, too)

wait... so you are saying that i should hit the power button... for the first time... before i charge it? Then i should put it in the cradle and as soon as it is in there, i should turn the battery off? I think that is what you ment...?

i think he means cradle it, then turn power on. you'll see the setup screen. at that point just power it back off and leave it for 4hrs.
