I'm absolutely 100% totally certain that you don't have to have an analog phone to use these cables. They sell these cables in the UK, for use with digital (GSM900/1800) mobile phones. I've never used one myself, but they're sold as "data cables" and intended for use connecting PDAs and laptops to cell phones to use as modems.
Absolutely certain. Now, it may be that your particular handset / provider combination doesn't support data calls, but GSM digital cell phones can and do.

No, I've used the IR ports on Motorola Timeports, Nokia 6210s and SonyEricsson T68is - all digital GSM phones - with various PDAs and laptops, all successfully (well, to call anything successful when you're talking about a motorola timeport is a bit of an exaggeration - it worked if the wind was blowing in the right direction and it was the third wednesday of the month - if it was in a good mood... but in theory it worked :D )

if you use the IR port on your cell phone you don't need to use a cable. your axim and phone just have to be close enough for the IR to work well.

I haven't got a cable here, I use my IR port, but I know you can get them - on the nokia site ( http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,5184,5984,00.html) there's details of which cables work with which (nokia) phones - take a look at the website of the manufacturer of your handset perhaps?
It may be true that your particular handset or cell provider doesn't allow data calls (although I can't imagine why they wouldn't, it's all revenue for them... perhaps phoning the provider up and asking them might clarify it?)

Does your cell phone have an IR port - if not you definitely need a cable IF it's possible with your handset.... that's the first thing to check.
