Cannot read the font in PPC Internet Explorer.

I am connected with my X3i through a Bluetooth SDIO card to my Bluetooth phone. I also access the web through the cradle. Both work fine. However, randomly and frequently I get various web pages that appear to be written in Hebrew. I don't read Hebrew so I don't know for sure, it just looks like it. I have tried to select text and change it with no success. Sometimes the same page will come up in English. Microsoft says it is Dell's problem and I cannot get Dell to respond. Any advice?

I have searched this forum for related threads. If there are other threads on this isssue, I apologize, I could not find them.

UNICODE (UTF-8) Character Set

Hello -

Do you mean the entire site is in Hebrew?

I saw a similar issue posted in another thread. One person reccomended to change the PIE character set to UNICODE (UTF-8). I did this and it corrected the problem I had (random hebrew characters). I would give it a shot and see what happens.

To change the character set, do the following:

While in PIE, choose tools - options, then click the advanced tab. At the bottom, you will see a language section. I'm willing to bet it is currently set at Western European. Change the defult character set to UNICODE (UTF-8), and then click OK. This might clear your problem.

Hope this helps

Thanks,

I have logged your advice. I have actually taken that path to change the character set but I do not remember specifically if I chose that particular option. I will try it.

You are like an insurance policy. When you have it you never need it because since I read your reply, I have not experienced the problem. I am thinking that is a good thing!

Thanks,

Michael

That's good to hear!

Cool, hope all stays well. I know that solved the issue for myself and several others. If it returns (let's hope not), give it a shot!

Good luck,

Well, I spoke too soon. Just yesterday I tried to pull up a web site and got the pseudo Hebrew font. As you suggested I selected all text and picked the UTF-8 character set but no success. If you have any other ideas (or maybe some way I did not do it right) I would appreciate the feedback.

Isn't it possible that I just need to re-install PIE? I guess that woudl require re-flashing the ROM but I am ok with that if I can just find out how to do it.

Thanks,

Michael

Michael -

Sorry to hear that it returned. You said that you selected the text? I didn't select any text, I just went into options and set the font to UTF 8. Also, PIE is included in WM 2003, which means it is in the ROM, so you would have to do a hard reset to re-install it. Could you have installed an app that might have changed some font settings? Maybe something in your regional settings.

Luckily, hard reseting your device is not too big a job. Make sure you've done a backup of all your data. Then, hard reset and test PIE. If it works OK, install a couple apps, then try the troubled site again. BTW, what site are you noticing these characters on? I'l like to check to see if I get the same thing.

It has been a while since your last advice but I wanted to let you know I used that advice and finally fixed my problem.

Per your suggestion, I did a hard reset. I created a new identity and added one application at a time until I had restored everything but the "files". I did not add them because I had been receiving a virus notice of the "WBeagle.32" or something like that. I cannot get my desktop antivirus software to remove or quarantine it and I have been sloppy about keeping my handheld antivirus software up to date.

That did fix it though. I am really posting this reply out of respect for your advice and to serve to help others who might encounter the same problem.

Thanks again. I am clean and productive again! I have been healed!!!

I am looking for a solution to a similar problem. In my case the font on www.cnn.com is coming up as Greek. Other websites I've tried are okay. The only other place I'm seeing Greek is in Pocket Word. I created a drawing, pasted it into a pocket word document and the little identifcation tag that says "drawing" is in Greek characters.

Unless I've overridden a key font by adding some to the fonts menu (they were Greek, needed for another program) the only other culprits could be Battery Bar or Agenda Fusion.

While in PIE, tap tools - options, then tap the advanced tab. In the Default character drop down box, choose Unicode (UTF-8). Click OK until you are back to the PIE main screen. Stop and restart PIE, then try the site again.

I am sorry to hear you are struggling with this, however little it may be. For me, the problem started small, infrequently, and randomly. However, it eventually affected every application I ran. I had Greek everywhere after a couple of months.

My solution turned out to be a hard reset and updated handheld anti virus. Probably keeping my anti virus up to date would have prevented it.

I hope this helps. If not, I wish you well. I am a real novice on this stuff.
