What Can I Do with an Ad-Hoc Connection?

I'd like to be able to connect to my friend's ipaq 4355 and his Dell Inspiron 600m to transfer files mostly. Is this the ad-hoc connection's purpose? How would I use it?

I don't know any other reason besides sharing an internet connection. But maybe some others know some other reasons. :)

An ad-hoc connection potentially has all the same uses as a normal (Access Point) connection for networking and wireless syncing. The only difference is that there is no direct connection to the Internet as there normally is with a WiFi Router/Access Point so, if the partner PC is not connected, you are essentially just on an Intranet.

you could stream mp3s to your axim. lets you have access to more than just what you can fit on your sd card.

Is that like when you take your dog out to do his business, and you're constantly saying things to him like:

"Would you PLEASE hurry up!?!"
"NO!!!, not there, I'll get sued if you do it there!"
"Quit peeping into that French Poodles doghouse, there's laws against that sorta thing."
"See that pooch over there? I think you should go get friendly with him. 'Cause I wanna get friendly with his owner!!"
"Would you quit sniffing everything and just get on with it!?!"

Wow in response to MrKlaatu's post. Is there a way to, for example, give my friend on his laptop a Word document from my PPC with Wi-Fi or Infared?

If not, would it be possible to plug my cradle into his computer and setup a guest partnership to give him files or something of the like?

Yes. To share files without first creating a partnership (which is necessary for wireless ActiveSync), your friend would need to have shared folders that you can access as part of a two-machine network.

You can also set up a guest partnership with the cradle but he'll need to download ActiveSync from M$ and install it on the PC and possibly also the Axim USB drivers from Dell.

.
.

I'm sure you can find a nice dog here:

Société protectrice des animaux du Canada

........although I don't think they'd look kindly on calling them "programs".

Microsoft Portrait will do it. Check near the bottom of the WiFi FAQ for details on ad-hoc between 2 PPCs.

Please post back if you have problems. I've had someone tell me they couldn't get it to work with those details and I couldn't tell what was different with their settings that caused the problem.
