I dont get it. I have an Axim X3i and the reset listed above in this thread does not work for me. I have tried the combo (scrollcenter + contacts button ) press and push reset, but my axim just has a blank screen. It turns on breifly when I hit the contact button but after I push in the reset it goes blank.
How long do you have to hold this combo for it to boot from SD. I have the SD card in the slot and the only file on the SD is the .img file for the A02 update.
HELP!
Installing it from the pc does not work as I keep getting the USB error that others are having. I have turned off my Virus scan software but still wont work.
HELP!!

It just takes it a few seconds to boot. The first that bootloader does when booting is check which buttons are pressed and depending on it boot wince or the bootloader utilities. Just make sure when you reset that both contacts and scroll button are pressed.
You may try the combo without a sd card so you can see if it boots the diagnostic utility. If it works, the problem maybe your SD card format. Try to format it using one of the utilities, for example Pocket Mechanic.
If you can't get the diagnostic utility maybe you are pressing the wrong keys. The scroll button is that wheel on the left and contacts is the button next to the joypad on the left.
Good luck.

great thread!
Can you please explain which Dell utility shall be used for ROM backup on a X3? The only one I find is the ActiveSync backup which is only for the data ...
Is there somwhere a ROM-database or overview or where can other ROMs be found?
Is a X3 even upgradeable to a X30 ROM?

I found out that many updates are country-specific! depending on how you enter the dell-support site certain updates/upgrades are available or not! So if you need another ROM just check other sites or download links from this forum... If entered a service-tag-number it might be necessary to delete cookies/restart session!
After checking several sites versions I could find a working ROM update including the backup-tool!

This trick messed up my X3!
I have done thid trick for updating rom and change the language 4 days ago. Everything was fine, but from yesterday, my Axim freez all the time, and i have to soft resset it for makin it workin again. Today, after 3 soft reset, it do not switch on anymore. Just the Dell screen load (with no lightning) , NO-THING else. Do you thing it's down for dustbin? Or is it a way back to get it workin again?
The most terrible is i changed the ROM language for having a french orthographic dictionnary, but Dell custommer service has just replied today to me, saying it's easy changing the dico language ! It's too bad.

I'm gonna flash with my first back up. But when i copy/past this backup to the Axim, ActivSync says it has to convert some files in accordance to... so those files could be some different from the original ones. Should i matter about that?
Edit: Axim do not recognise my backup. (though i rename A00-09100300EN.ris to A00-09100300EN.IMG)
How can i go back to a previous original ROM?

First I would suggest that you disable the conversion in ActivSync, or better and faster load the original ROM (which you hopefully have backuped) via another SD-reader e.g. a digital camera with SD...
Then, during the ROM flashing remove the battery, but leave the axim on the net-power (not in the cradle!)
Leave the flashing enough time, although it seems to be finished after a few minutes, it might need some longer until everything is resetted correctly ... give it half an hor or so...
good luck!

Thx a lot for support POPS, but it seems my Axim is dying like. This morning, it use to launch one time out of ten, and now, it does not launch at all. I try with SD card (512 Mo, or 16Mo) without Sd card, with cradle, with USB, with net-power... Nothing can help.
I don't understand why it's dying.
It's like each time i try to switch it on, some important files are lost! And now, it's less of settings...

Sorry for your axim. When my x3 was dying the ROM update rescued it! But if not even the "magic key combination" works...

X30 Rom FLash--Change to Japanese
Please, if you have any information on how to change the rom on my x30 to japanse I would be very greatfull. I bought the PDA assuming that I could switch languages just like on winXP--boy was I wrong
Please, help me solidarity9_6347@hotmail.com
QUOTE=kazuni]Thanks for the guide -
I was successful in flashing *part* of the rom - the rom was divided into 2 parts (as the bootloader says) and it won't continue flashing afterso......
------------------status changed:
Yes i have successfully flashed my device into a different language. You can follow the guide here:

It's explained on first post!
But mind this trick is NOT allowed by Dell.
If any problem occures during the flash, Dell will NOT repair your device.
The best way avoiding problems is transfering the IMG to your SD card via another device, like a digital camera or via a SD card reader. Then, boot your axim with the bootloader trick.
An other way, safer, is to change the language of your orthographic dictionnary. http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=79868

Hi folks. How do I locate a ROM image for my X3i? Mine has the original A0 (09100300EN) in it. When I check the Dell support area, it doesn't show anything available.
I believe my ROM image is corrupted as my X3i boots but behaves strangely. Responsiveness is very sluggish. Almost as if there is a hung process. Inputs from stylus plus buttons is very slow or outright ignored. Plus my menus are garbled. :exc: Labels repeat and don't match icons. Start menu is transparent to the background but you cannot select anything. Sometimes I can get multiple menus to show on top of each other. When in this state, the menus will not go away unless you soft-reset.
Has been working fine and syncing. Nothing new added but a couple of days ago it just started to degrade. Now it is unusable.
Have also tried hard resets as well as draining down power all the way but still no joy.
My Axim is out of warranty and Dell Support can't do anything to help other than provide the number for Sales. When it works it has been nice but Wince locks up fairly easily and with the crapy design of the connector (my pins are exposed and I've very carefully avoided bending anything for the last few months). Frankly, I can use it as a trade in with another brand of PDA vs. spend big bucks for a referb or buy another from Dell...
Thanks for listening. I hope someone can help salvage this puppy.
