I read all the reviews and was generally stoked about getting my new Axim X30 Mid. I read the entire manual before it even got here. The Axim shipped before the expected ship date by a week. All was good. Then I got it...
First off, the sync cable was missing. After paying for the fastest possible shipping (next day) I couldn't even sync via USB. I don't know how Dell could have screwed that up. I contacted support and asked to have one overnighted to me since that's what I initially payed for. They said they would ship one within 3-5 days (which means at least a week after shipping time). I managed to find a friend who had one laying around so at least I could try it out.
Second, the Wifi works like crap. I know how to use Wifi, I've had it since the first 802.11b routers came out. This Wifi on this thing is a pile. I couldn't even get my home network recognized, even though I had disabled encryption and had added the Axim to the trusted MAC list. I eventually found that nice little hack for keeping Power Management off. There is no reason that this thing should have been shipped in this state. I don't know if it was Dell's or Microsoft's fault but this is not acceptable.
Third, I bought this thing mainly to play emulators. While Pocket NES was very smooth (great CPU), the buttons on this thing are way way too small. I don't know what they were thinking when they designed this but it must be really oriented towards business/PIM instead of gamers. I wish that Dell had made the navigator button larger and to the left and put the two other right buttons to the right and larger. I wish that someone on this board had spoken up and said how difficult it is to game on this thing because I sure didn't read anything like that. If you are buying this to game on, stay FAR FAR AWAY!
Fourth, I had a dead pixel right in the middle of the display. I understand that this sometimes happens with LCD's but that sucks royally.
Fifth, the new version of Mobile Windows sucks ass. How the X's could not exit a program still escapes me (nice touch by Dell to put that switcher in, don't know how else I would quit these programs). Pocket Internet Explorer sucks serious ass. There is very little customization and pages load incredibly slow (could be a function of the crappy Wifi implementation or something too). I did like the "transcriber" thing but the little quirks just pissed the hell out of me.
Oh forget it, it's going back anyway what the hell does it matter...
Good luck to all of you that use this piece of crap excuse for a PDA.
1st) The sync cable is shipped separately for all Axims (yes, it's stupid).
2nd) WiFi works. Read through the troubleshooting guides here. Turn off power management.
3rd) I didn't see anywhere in the description that it was meant to play emulators. It's great if you want to give them a shot, but spending $350+ on a device that you don't even know will work with whatever emulator you want?
4th) Yeah, that sucks. Send it back, get a new one.
5th) I don't understand why X's don't exit programs, but SPB Pocket Plus works great and is worth the $15.
Looks like you really gave it a chance since you've had it for a few days and you're already sending it back...
That's too bad you've had all that trouble. I feel like one of the lucky ones. So far everything works and everything shipped. I haven't had any problems at all not even wifi. At least you can get your money back.
I think what you're asking is pretty much something that works same as desktop PC or laptop. There are things that we must compromise between PC and PDAs. Dead pixel and dell's incompetent service is very reasonable reason to get upset and I totally agree with you.
Mine works better than I thought. Mine was shipped with charger and cradle together.

For all your Operating System problems, you do know that there are other software programs that you can buy and install to customize the OS. You don't have to use the default IE explorer, and you don't have to use the defualt title/start bar. And there are PLENTY of programs that allow the X in the corner to actually close the program.
But as for all your hardware problems, I guess you just have bad luck.
I just got my X30 a week ago and it is my first PocketPC (4 Palms before). I love it and you can call me whatever you want, but the WiFi does work and the handheld was NOT made to run emulators on.
Good riddance. You really showed class with your three posts here.
1) My x30 works great wifi, BT, everything.
2)Mabey you should have purchased a gameboy.
3) Mr. K always make me laugh even when Im the butt of his humor.
If you want a full functioning PC for the go.... get a TabletPC. I have a gateway M275 and I love it. I use it for meeting and notes... I also sync it with my X30. I use the X30 when I can't carry my M275. Mainly the X30 for me is just a task/calendar tool. The TabletPC is for my nothing taking tool, emulation tools and regular programs. BTW if you are turned off by the TabletPC don't be stupid :exc: ! The OS that comes with it kinda sucks... but when SP2 for XP comes out it adds a much better tablet input panel. I have been running the beta and it is ten times better than the current tablet edition. Just telling you this so you don't B*tch and send it back if you get one.
I have to say I have had no problems at all with my x30. WiFi works GREAT! speed is great. screen no problems there. Today I'm gonna work on sync wireless. Hopefully I am able to do it. But the rest of the tut was pretty easy to follow!! Thanks so much for writing that. Sorry you have not had a enjoyable experience with dell..
No problems, huh? Turn power management off for me. What, you can't? Oh, that's ok...set an alarm to go off at 3:45 this afternoon...wait, it didnt go off? Oh well, still no problems, right?

Funny, my wi-fi works great and so do my alarms. I had no need for an alarm but reading that they did not work I gave it a try. The alarm went off with no problems. I'm not saying some of you don't have problems, but not all of us have them.
