X30 on the road
I asked something similar to this before so chastise if you must. My wife got me a X30 for Father's Day. I hope...1) to get it and 2) to use it while traveling for work. My question is, what do you do if there is no wi-fi in the hotel? I know Asus and others make a suitable Wi-fi router. Do these things just plug into a high speed connector and produce a Wi-fi signal or what. Does anyone else do this? Is it a pain in the ass? Please excuse me for being stupid...I'm really good with wires, really I am.

Don't know the specific brands but companies make wireless access points that you can plug into hotel room RJ-45 jacks (network jacks) and you have an instant wireless network.

Yes, you would plug the CAT-5 network cable into the Asus router. Then, you would connect to the router wirelessly via your Axim! I'm assuming that this is what you are referring to . . .

Thanks for the quick replies. This Wi-fi stuff just mystifies me. It should be fun learning it.

Yep, by the looks of it, it looks pretty to configure on the fly. Basically, it will take the IP address in the hotel room and NAT it out, and your Axim will pull an IP address from its virtual DHCP server. See how fun it is to learn this stuff!! ;)

I am a road warrior too but I don't expect my PDA to take the place of my lap top. Once in a Hotel I want a PC screen to surf with .....not a dippy little PPC screen. My Dell X30H will be great in Airport Terminals, etc where I don't want to boot up.

As soon as you get it, bring it on over to test the WiFi at my house.

I have Wi-Fi in my house. My lap top is always "on" . I'm sure I'll never need new reading material in the John ever again when my Axim arrives...lol

I agree completely about using a laptop vs. the axim for surfing b/c of screen size. However, I'm on the road right now and my company laptop is down. My axim is my only connection to the net right now, including email. Before I found out this hotel has free wifi in all the rooms I was ready to go out and buy an access point.

you could also just link up to your cell phone, that way you always have a connection, and the cable will retain use after your trips

As I understand it there is a card that can be plugged into a High Speed wall jack too. Isn't there? Most hotels I stay at (plug for Marriott) have free high speed. That would solve the lap top is out of order scenario. Anyone has any good leads on this topic?

Don't you need a Blue Tooth Phone and also pay for an Internet access plan with your wireless provider to access the internet with your x30H & your cell phone?

not really, you dont need bluetooth, just the cable. You dont need to have cellular internet assuming you have a dial up number to call.
If you have a phone, and a dial up ISP, then all you need to do is buy the cable.
