Long time listener, first time caller....Nine x30 questions

Hi girls,

Thanks to everyone for a month of lurking and learning- I finally bought an x30 high, and love it. Came from 3 palms, most recently a T. Still have it if anyone wants to buy! :D

Here, I learned how to set up my wireless internet and synch, I learned about sniffers, speaker hisses, wireless range and setup, and great shareware- a totally awesome forum.

1. Like on a tablet PC, I want to use the stylus to "write" ( graphics ) a handwritten letter to an email recipient. You know, the old fashioned way. Is there an ink program the integrates/works with pocket outlook email to allow me to hand draw a letter, then send it as a jpeg or whatnot? Either thru sync with desktop outlook, or thru an smtp account on the x30 and pocket outlook?

2. I read about the speaker hiss- on my external I have some ambient hiss, not as loud as a snake or a tire leak, but loud enough to hear. Am I defective, or os this just a small thing to bear with digital mp3s? It's an audiobook, so maybe the recordning sucks....

3. The best price on an sd card is new egg at 175-ish for a 1 gig sd card, right? If in the future they come out with a 2 gb, am I to assume that the x30 specs are laid in stone- an sd slot that accomodates "up to" a 1gb card, and no more???

4. The upper right corner of mt screen has the x to close programs- I have to sometimes hit it twice as it does not seem to be quite as sensitive as the other parts of the screen. Do I suffer from screen sensitivity enough to need a return, or, again, this is just within the normal range...

5. Other than wolfclock, is there a clock with a chime 15 minutes, or hourly? Will it turn on to chime if it's off?

6. Is there a list somewhere of programs that can run totally ( program and data ) or partially ( program on sd card and data in ram ) of the sd card? I'm thinking with a palm head here, and with palm, this is still an issue- maybe I need a primer on how ppc handles data, data writes, and such. My real point here is, if I have 64M ram, and a 65M database on sd card- are there programs that can access and write but transferring partial pieces of the 65M database to ram, write, and then transfer back- - or -- by simple math, one can not edit a 65M database residing on the card if one has only 64M RAM?.....

7. VOIP. Has anyone been able to use the x30 to talk thru the net VIA the wifi connection? I use net2phone, and also packet8.net.

8. IM. I installed agilemessenger 2.10. Yahoo still never works. Other than yahoo's ppc client, and multi-network ppc IM actually work consistently with all 4 big ones?

9. I read conflicting accounts- It's been 10 days since my order- can I indeed retro order the total care package ( the spill coffee on it and get it replaced one ) ? Do I need to buy the extended warrantee for the same frame as the extended total care, or are they simply independent?

I'm totally sorry fgor dumping all these questions on you, but I figured I'd just shoot my data packet all at once, and then go on to help others as I just registered...

Thanks! :p

Re: Long time listener, first time caller....Nine x30 questions

1. Not that I've seen - but there is no reason why it's not technically possible. Just not much demand for it I guess... Maybe the easier way it to just find a basic graphics app and use that. Save as JPEG and then send the JPEG as an attacehment.

2. -

3. Nope - should support 2 Gig.

4. If it's not screen protector related, I'd swap it.

5. Not sure.

6. The way that I understand it, is that most files are opened and copied to RAM before being read. So I believe that the 64MB database limitation may apply, but it depends on the method used by the application to open the file. Opening a 250MB video from SD cards through Windows Media Player is possible. If the database has to be read entirely into memory though then you'd be SOL.

7. PocketSkype is a big hit at the moment but doesn't work on the X30.

8. Not sure.

9. I've heard 30 days. But I'd check with Dell directly.

Sorry I can't answer all of them :)

There is a program called IMOV Messenger that allows you to use Yahoo, AOL, MSN, ICQ, and Jabber
I have not used this program yet ( my axim is still being built ) so i am unsure exactly how well it works on the axim.
But the price is good, its FREE
here is a link:
IMOV Messenger
i hope this helps and once again welcome:D

High-

Thanks for helping out on these threads of mine.

http://www.ppcuniverse.net/downloads.html

is where I found pyahoo still hosted. Agile 3 should be out soon, so maybe they will have fixed the Y! problem. I get the same no-connect from easymessage.net as well. Yahoo is a tough nut. You'd think MS would be the one to not play....

Thanks again.

Too bad there's no hibernate on the Axim where a tiny battery trickle would allow wifi barely enough signal for IM to listen on the net and wake up completely only if pinged.

What a daydream I"m having here...

I think I"m going to look into the Mugen 2000mah battery.

i'd def go for the mugen battery man, i love mine

as far as the speaker hiss....i think it's more a issue of a hiss when you listen thru headphones as opposed to the speaker, i think you're prolly ok if there's a small hiss there. try the headphones tho.

as far as #6, i am fairly sure it's a software dependant issue. if it reads to ram from external memory, then you can open it, then that would require a big slowdown as far as reading big media files, and i'm not really seeing that. sorry i couldn't help more with that.

good luck, and thanks for posting these questions, maybe i'll learn some more too!

Actually -- Yahoo hosed everyone last month, see:

Yahoo to Trillian: Talk to the Hand
http://news.com.com/Yahoo+to+Trillia...tml?tag=cd.top

and they say they plan to keep changing protocols to prevent other software from connecting to Yahoo IM..

In the meantime, MS has announced that they plan to introduce interservice IM in its Enterprise version of MSN chat. Let's see how THEY do with Yahoo. ;-)

Related to #1. The Pocket Notes program has a handwriting mode. It's the default on mine but I may have set it that way. Within the program under the Tools menu is a "Send via E-mail..." choice.

I wrote out a note and sent it to myself. It arrived as a *.pwi attachment which automatically opened in M$ Word with the note as an image. Again, I'm not sure if I added something to M$ Word that allows it to open pwi files or if that is standard with current versions (I have Word 2000).

If there are just certain people you want to communicate with this this way, you can send them a test message and see if it works for them.
