Looking for reasons not to buy x30? Help me find one
I am looking into getting a pocket pc to go to grad school. I'm using it for in class notes. I have been looking for a while and here is my needs.
1. Something that can go into landscape for taking notes.
2. Has to be able to handle mp3
3. bluetooth and Wifi
4. 2003 SE a plus
5 I want something that can last 2 years or more without needing a serious upgrade (624 mhz)
What I don't care about.
1. VGA it is nice but as long as i can see it clearly i don't care and not doing much with pictures
2. Don't have to have it exactly now
3. Price is not the only consideration
What would be nice
1. CF capability
2 Larger screen
Anyway all you x30 owners are there any regrets. Anything you wish you had?
Thnks

I love both my X5 and X30,
To address your concerns:
Why exactly do you need the CF ability? The screen on the X30 and X5 are fine for PDA usage, it's not like you'll be typing essays or doing heavy photo manipulation on them :) Then again, if you want to "take notes" a bigger screen is going to be better, of course.

Personally I want what you dont want, which is a VGA screen. Other than that I am very satisfied with my X30 High. The little foldable keyboard is great! And I mention that because you said for taking notes, and I am a college student so I know how that goes. But you can't use landscape with a keyboard since it plugs in the bottom . Most Pocket PCs can handle MP3s, iPaqs, Axims... now it seems like very few would have problems with it. My X30 works good with MP3s. If you don't need it right away you might want to wait, especially since I just read in a magazine that Intel is already working on ANOTHER new processor for release in Janurary. But the 624 MHz Intel PXA270 is the fastest on the market for PPCs right now. Also keep in mind that the 312 MHz PXA270 runs faster than the 400 MHz PXA 255 (found in the last generation of iPaqs, Axim X5/X3(i)). I think your only gripe would be no CF slot and the screen might be a little small for your tastes (3.5").

What are you going to grad school for?
Just get the high. Its not that much more than the mid and cheaper than a comparable iPAQ or Clie. You don't want to be down the road from now in 6 months wishing you hadn't been so cheap to save, what, $50? Just do it. :D

The new Executive Keyboard (bluetooth) should be able to handle landscape mode easily enough.

I agree the $50 difference in price alone is worth the purchase of the X30H and I would consider the BT keyboard.

Does anyone know if the IR wireless keyboards can be used with landscape on the axim? Also does anyone have the Axim Executive Keyboard with Bluetooth link? I can't find it on the dell website.
Thanks

I think the Executive Keyboard is too new that it is not "officially" for sale. Dell will probably make changes to their Axim Accessory web page to include the keyboard and the new GPS unit simultaneously.

Bluetooth keyboard would work on landscape mode!
If you're not in a hurry to buy a pocket pc right now then just wait for the new ones to come out. Be the one of the first people to purchase the new Axims, you'll have a longer time enjoying it and depreciation wouldn't be that soon! I've had my X5 400 MhZ since November 2002 and the X5s are still around! Almost 2 years now and worth it!

IR wireless keyboards such as those from belkin or thinkoutside should work in landscape mode because they have the infrared beam arms that can move to a desire angle to make sure it maintains an eyesight connection with your PDA's infrared receiver. I also want the executive keyboard, i hope it will be cheap as they said and please come out fast enough (not like the pda itself, sigh!)

The problem I see with the wireless keyboard is battery life. Having to have Bluetooth enabled to use the keyboard is going to put a lot of strain on the battery, which makes me happy with my wired dell keyboard.

Yea, that's y i ordered a spare extended battery, I guess it will last then. The reason why i like a wireless keyboard is that i can easily switch from portrait to landscape or so and if i were to switch PDA, or use it on the other PDA, the keyboard won't be obsolete. Still waiting for it to come out though.

ttown,
Do a search in the X30 accessories thread for Targus IR keyboard w/ SE. In that thread someone reported using that keyboard with X30 in landscape mode.
I’ve been waiting forever for a BT keyboard, but am seriously considering the IR for three reasons: 1) can use it on an airplane (probably not a big concern for you if in grad school); 2) price is a good bit lower than BT; and 3) the battery use issue.
What we really need is PPC with mini USB ports and foldable keyboards with BT and USB options!

Must So agreed, everything should have at least BT or USB, in terms of keyboard, both! When will PPC manufactures realize the importance of this?
