ActiveSynch "Problem" ... ?

Hi folks,

If it would be more appropriate to post this in the "newbie" forum, jus' let me know ... I searched but did not find a solution to this issue.

I have my X30 High as of yesterday (Yay, finally!) and am pretty sure the unit itself is fine -- all my problems so far have been either user error or software/system quirks, as far as I can tell.

I don't understand a few things about ActiveSynch (3.7.1) though.

1. I don't really want the Axim to Activesynch every time I put it in the cradle; so I set it on manual on the desktop (WinXP Pro) ... but the Axim synchs every time I put it in the cradle, anyway..

And when I take it out of the cradle -- unless I shut down Activesynch immediately (getting the annoying message when I do so using the Switcher Bar) ... I can no longer browse the web using IE, even though I still have wifi connected. I get "page not found" errors. If I shut down Activesynch first, usually I am able to go right back on the 'net. But not always. A soft reset "fixes" the problem in either case. Is this normal -- is it a good idea just to do a soft reset every time when removing from the cradle?

2. Related to #1 -- I come from the Palm world -- I thought I would be able to just let the Axim sit in the cradle, viewable and charging, and it wouldn't synch unless I told it to. I put it in the cradle when on and the screen goes blank and it synchs. I can't view the screen when the device is in the cradle. Help? ;-)

3. At this point, I don't even have anything that I want to synch! I'm not a fan of using Outlook and don't really want it on my PC ... I'm looking for alternatives for scheduling/calendaring ... maybe I'll end up with Outlook. Suggestions?

Maybe I shouldn't have activesynch loaded at all, though I think I need it to load some programs. ;-)

4. Is there a built-in voice recorder program that I just can't find?

Otherwise ... I'm really pleased so far. Had no trouble with wifi or router issues ... or bluetooth (had never used the latter before; I bought a USB bluetooth adaptor for my ancient laptop and the Axim and it talked just fine) ... and I need to figure out browsing the local network but I see a tutorial on that.

Thanks, in advance ...

  1. From AS on your PC select Tools, Backup/Restore and uncheck the Automatically backup... option (bottom LHC)
  2. Make sure that you haven't set the device to dim on external power: Start, Settings, Brightness
  3. Can't help...I love Outlook! :D
  4. On the X3, the record button is the recessed button on the BLC of the Axim, press and hold until it beeps: in the old manual P58 give instructions.
Hope this helps

Thanks for #2 and #4 ... and #3 ... I'm gladja like it. ;-)

No luck on #1, however. The box is unchecked; everything in schedule is set to manual ... unchecked "Open ActiveSynch when my mobile device connects"; etc ...

and it still synchs, unbidden.

Maybe if I reboot my PC ... (shrug)

You could delete the partnership and set up as a guest. That way you won't sync or back up but you will charge.

You'll also be able to install programmes, etc.

Thanks ... Yeah, I tried that ... but it was annoying that I had to set up as a Guest every time I put it in the cradle. ;-)

Maybe I'm just in the wrong *mood* for this today.

LOL ... I'll stop being annoyed with it. I do like the thing, it'll take some getting used to.

I think ActiveSync is designed to automatically connect whenever a PPC is detected. Probably the easiest solution if you want to use the cradle for charging is to unplug the USB connection when you don't want to sync.

Thanks. I guess it is either that, or be a "Guest" forever in my own house. ;-)

I don't understand what the point is in setting everything to "Manual" if it's gonna synch no matter what.

My main annoyances with it are:

1. Activesynch doesn't close on the PPC when you remove it from the cradle; maybe I need to close it before removing the PPC from the cradle ...

2. When I do close it, I get that screen that says it's busy or unresponsive, and hit OK ... and then Internet Explorer may or may not be able to browse. Restarting Odyssey may or may not help with that ... soft reset always puts things right.

Maybe I'll remove WEP, though it doesn't seem like that should do anything ... somehow, even though wifi is on, and the signal is strong ... I think it's losing its IP.

More tinkering. ;-)

To help with your #1 question, here's what I did:

Once I synced in the cradle, after creating a partnership and following the directions here on Aximsite to sync through the wifi, I unplugged the USB cord on the cradle. This way, I can put it on the cradle to charge and view while I'm at my desk, and I can ActiveSync manually through the Axim whenever I need to.

Search the site here for info about syncing through WiFi...that will also allow you to install software.

Hope that helps!
Tim

I understand what you are asking but AS is designed to (inherently) connects/sync constantly. You can change it so that it only SYNCS manually (tools|options....).

There's no reason really to shutdown AS after removal from the cradle. It's designed to stay 'resident' to allow for a faster connection upon resinsertion to the cradle.

Thanks, got that ... but ...

(again, sorry if I sound like a scratched CD ...)

I set everything to manual, and it synchs the second it's in the cradle, anyway? I gather that means "manual ... after the first time."

As to leaving AS running ... well, when I do, I have to soft reset, anyway, to get Internet Explorer back to browsing ...

Though I admit, I've no idea if those things are at all related. Just seemed that they might be ... since I only lose the ability to browse after a synch.

;-)

I notice someone started another thread along these lines ...

LOL ...

Anyway, since it was my first day with the damn thing, I screwed around with it some more, loaded some different things, tried everything out -- and then did a hard reset, and put everything back together methodically.

I don't know specifically what turned out differently ... and it still synchs on connect, against my wishes -- but it no longer screws up Pocket IE, browsing or the network, so what the hell. I backed it up and I'm going to bed. ;-)
