Hello All,
I'm an entering Freshmen at USC and just got my first Dell Axim X30. I thought it would be good to share some programs, uses, tips, and other things that make the Axim X30 so perfect for school.
I had been using a Handspring Visor for the last 4 years in high school but it was impossible to not upgrade when I found out how wonderful the Axim X30 is and how reasonably it is being priced.
Now that I have my contacts all converted I am getting used to the new schedule and task interface so I can keep track of my class assignments and business on the X30.
At USC there is wifi virtually everywhere so I have been brainstorming for ways to take advantage of this. Primarily having it set up to sync on the fly and get my email is obvious, but I also want to have easy access to media on my desktop machine while on the go such as video, music and assignments (documents). I found RESCO explorer to be very useful for browsing local networks and managing my files. For playing the media GSPlayer worked best for any kind of music that I'd be using and it is free! PocketTV works very well for movies that windows media player can't handle.
I have a TV tuner card in my desktop computer and have it set to record my favorite tv shows like CrossFire and save them in a pocketpc format that ends up being about 32 megs per episode that I can then download onto my 512mb SD card or watch over the network.
I may set up a streaming shoutcast server to listen to my mp3s with some web interface to control currently playing items, any advice in this area would be welcome.
Some other useful programs I have installed are:
Pocket Streets - So I don't get lost in LA.
PDAWin TV Remote - Incase I need to control the tv in the dorm lounge ;)
For entertainment I found Warfare Incorporated to be very addicting this game is almost exactly like Command and Conquer and has a great interface and good graphics on the pocketpc.
I plan on using my Axim as a replacement for my old Rio MP3 player with the streaming music and storage on the 512mb card. Anyone have good headphone recommendations that are small and portable yet have good sound?
Having all these many uses lead me to order a 2000mah extended battery so that I won't miss a beat all day. Great deals on ebay for these.
Anyone else taking their Axim to college? What are you doing with it that is cool/helpful?
I'm going to be taking it to my school... Not college though. Do you know of any good homework app. I'll be using just the to-do list and i dont think that'll cut it. Thanks
Got MIPS? Want to donate some for a good cause? You are welcome to join one of my BOINC teams at:

Yeah...
I'll be taking my Axim to college at Clemson. We also have wifi everywhere so it's great for checking email quick browsing etc. Also cool to keep classes organized. Or..to have some fun during class!
Go Tigers!!!
I'm taking mine to High School (senior though) and would reccomend Pocket Homework. There is a link somewhere on this site to a direct download, along with the desktop software. Pretty nice and free. Also, check out www.freewareppc.com and get this quiz maker deal. It looks like it would help out any student to make practice quizzes.

I guess maybe I should have asked what tv tuner are you using? I am using Hauppauge WinTv, but I am looking for something that will record from the tv tuner directly to pocketpc format without using Windows Media Encoder. Does anyone know of such a program?
I'm an entering senior in college and I have survived the past three years without a ppc or laptop. This summer though, I realized it would be nice to have my own mobile computer (our library has laptops for students to borrow) that I can use anywhere and since my school offers free wi-fi it needed to have wireless capabilities. So I just ordered an X30high with the foldable keyboard. I can't wait till it comes in (estimated ship date is Aug 30th, two weeks after school starts!)
Only if my college offers wifi over the entire campus, sigh, they are slow in this catch up game (though i do understand the campus is quite huge to cover it all, but at least in the lecture hall! We need some entertainment like IM, internet during those long and boring lectures.)

The more I buy, the more I know. Who said knowledge was cheap?
Axim X30 High
Dell Bluetooth Keyboard (aka Executive Keyboard)
Dell Extended Battery (Spare)
Kingston 256MB SD
Kingston 512MB SD
Cheap Belkin Screen Protectors
Nokia 6230 (PDA online EVERYWHERE "well, almost")
Some other softwares...
I'm graduating from college in December. Just recently, our business building (which is where I spend all of my time) just recently installed Wi-fi. They have been talking about it for years. I just wish they would have waited until I was completely gone. Then, it wouldn't have been that bad because I wouldn't have known.

Like your school, the university I go to (the University College of the Cariboo - I kid you not - http://www.cariboo.bc.ca :) ) has wifi access.
I plan on using my Axim with Vonage's softphone service to place/receive phone calls while on campus. Vonage doesn't officially support the PocketPC platform, but you can follow the links from their site to a compatible softphone client.
I've been really happy with my home vonage service, and am looking forward to trying their softphone.

I'm using ATI TV Tuner card. It is very handy because you can easily select schedules and formats for your different programs. So ones I like to watch in full on my computer I can record at DVD quality, ones I like to watch on the go to be current like CNN CrossFire I put in pocketpc format.
