I suggest using WiFi for this purpose. It's much faster.
Just set up an ad-hoc network on both the laptop and PDA, setting each to connect when there is no other wireless network.
Remember, Bluetooth is somewhat like wireless RS-232, while WiFi is wireless Ethernet.

Here is what worked for me... it allows you to use the older version (Pre SP2) of the Bluetooth software. I found the SP2 Bluetooth stack didn't allow me to specifiy services for the AXIM, so I couldn't put active sync and bluetooth Serial Ports.

Good luck!

At least this is what happens to me (using xp sp2)... other than that it works good.
... in addition ...

I found that each time I disconnected and reconnected the BT dongle, then deleted and re-added the comm port, it would assign the next higher port; com4, then com5, then com6... then com10, 11, 12, etc...

The problem is that ActiveSync will only recognize ports 1...9; so activesync stopped working today.

I tried the suggestions that were available on Google, but to no avail. I ended up adding a com11, then through the control panel, device manager, com11 properties, I was able to click the advanced button and select the com port I wanted it to use.

It warned that another application was using the com port (4 in my case), but that seemed unlikely. I told it to continue dispite the undefined behavior for the application that was using it. I was then able to remove and re-add the comm port (4), then activesync could see it.

I hope that makes sense... and helps someone else... it was a pain to figure out.
