I just got my axim and am wondering the same thing. But what do all these programs do? Also I have noticed that alot of the websites I need to visit don't support Pocket Explorer? Anyway around that or is there other software I would need. Any help is appraciated.

Since you're a student you probably don't have a lot of cash to spend on software so I'll list some FREE or low-cost essentials:

FREE SOFTWARE:

#1 RegKing 2003 (FREE) - these "hacks" allow you to tweak various properties of your Axim, most noticably, allowing Pocket IE to load faster and allowing you to browse any site including banking sites. This is a MUST for anyone looking to browse the web with their Axim.

#2 Total Commander (FREE) - a file explorer that gives you greater control over you Axim's files. Copy, paste, delete, move, clipboard, etc. It also allows you to wirelessly browse any networked drives. You can stream music, movies and open files on your Axim that are still on your networked drive(s)! GET THIS SOFTWARE NOW!

#3 PHM RegEdit (FREE) - allows you to edit your Axim's registry, as well a tweak it & clean up any unnecessary dead paths, files, etc.

#4 Ftxp Browser (FREE) - Tab Browsing for Pocket IE... think of it as a plug-in that allows multiple windows/tabs to be opened up
in PIE similar to Mozilla/FireFox for the PC.

#5 vxUtil (FREE) - helps you set up a wireless connection or troubleshoot one. It will come in handy while trying to connect to your campus's network and Hot Spots.

#6 Agile Mobile Messenger (FREE) - Trillian for the PPC! It allows you to connect to several Instant Messenger program simultaneously, like AIM, Yahoo, MSN, under one simple, clean interface.

#7 Pocket Skype (FREE) - Make internet phone calls to anyone in the world with Skype (FOR FREE) as well as any landline/cell phone numbers (for a nominal fee) but let it be known that it's still in Beta so some of the features aren't up and running.

#8 PocketDict (FREE) - a free dictionary that will surely come in handy when writting your school papers.

#9 Adobe Acrobat (FREE) - for viewing PDF files.

#10 Avantgo (FREE) - download news, stocks, or custom web pages for offline viewing. Comes in super handy when you want to catch up while on a train, bus, whatever or wherever you can't get a WiFi s
ignal.

#11 Dockware (FREE) - a calendar & clock screensaver that displays any pictures you want.

#12 Microsoft Money for the Pocket PC 2004 (FREE) - a simple expense tracker and financial tool that can also sync with the 2004 desktop version.

#13 Remote Display Control (FREE) - allows your PC to control your Axim as well as take screenshots, view the Axim's screen and input data, execute Axim programs, etc., alk from you PC's keyboard and screen.

#14 Pocket Streets (FREE) - Microsoft Streets for your Axim to help you get around your new college's town and find things like nearby eateries, banks, gas stations, etc.


PAY SOFTWARE:

#1 Sprite Backup (WORTH EVERY PENNY!) - backs up and restores your Axim on the fly. GET THIS SOFTWARE NOW! It's worth every penny! (Saved my bacon on more occassions than I care to admit).

#2 TextMaker (SPLURGE) - fully functioning document maker similar to Windows Word for the PC but it's for the PPC. I'm sure you'll have to do a ton of papers and you'll soon come to see the extereme limitations of Pocket Word... use TextMaker inste

#3 Journal Bar 3.0 - displays weather, stocks, news, etc. on your Today Screen ... very handy.

And don't forget to click "No" when it asks you if you want to install to the default location. Choose "Built In Storage" (built in Flash) and keep your RAM open. I started a topic on this elsewhere on Aximsite. The default installs programs to RAM and they'll suck up precious RAM resources.
