How can I eliminate a menu item on start menu?

I installed an application that was for older pocketpc and it didn't work so I deleted the files, but I have the item still listed in my start menu and I don't know how to get rid of it. On the page that allows editing of the start menu, it is not listed. But it is still on the menu even though the associated files are gone!

I need help with this one.

Thanks

Paul

Use a File Explorer and simply go to Windows>Start Menu and delete the item that you don't want.

Unchecking shortcuts in the Menus applet under Settings does not delete them. It hides them in some odd way, as after doing so these LNK files are no longer visible to any explorer. I don't like thls sort of 'magical' interference with the file system, and so haven't used this applet since about autumn of 2000.

I usually use Total Commander to ferret out dead links, but some Start Menu items just don't want to die. They refuse to deleted or can't be located by the user at all... any clues?

If you have EVER used the Menu applet in Settings to uncheck a shortcut, it is likely the cause of such a problem. Once this stinker has been used to modify display of a shortcut some mysterious alternate file system comes into play, making it very difficult to edit such shortcuts.

A shortcut is just a simple text file, given the path to the target an a number in a particular sort of syntax, and instead of a TXT extension it gets the extension LNK. You may check how these work by opening a few in any notepad. PHM's or Tillanosoft's notepads work fine. You may even use Pocket Word if you make a copy and move it to the My Documents folder, and rename the extention to TXT. Pocket Word will display the correct contents of the LNK file so renamed and allow you to edit it to point to another target if you like. Save the file as TXT, then rename the extension to LNK and it becomes a tap-launchable shortcut again. With such simplicity there is really no need to engage in strange applet checking and unchecking. That's just a baby-sitter for users, sort of like dynamic memory allocation (which often closes things I want to stay open, even though there's tons of memory left) and the whole My Documents-based file display system in Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, Notes, and other applications.
