reinstalling ActiveSync

My computer freaked out and I had to reinstall ActiveSync to get it to start. Since reinstalling, ActiveSync is asking to create a new relationship between my computer and my Axim. I specify a Standard Partnership (as I previously had), but ActiveSync says that "This device name already in use. Please select another device name." It seems my computer thinks my X30 is a different device, even though it has the same name as always.

I don't want to select another device name because I want to sync the data and software for my original device name.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Delete the previous partnership on your PC and recreate one.

With your Axim OFF the cradle, open up ActiveSync on your desktop. Click on File --> Delete Partnership. Then try syncing again.

Thanks for responding Gigi, I am at home and running Linux. I couldn't remember exactly where and didn't want to confuse him.

That is not a highlighted (available) option. It is on the menu, just not available, as though no partnership exists, but when I try to sync I again get the message "this device name already in use." Is there some registry setting?

It would be because the axim is in the cradle. Remove and try again. If still not showing try to unconnect the cradle from the PC and delete the partnership.

It is out of the cradle, and Active Sync (while out of the cradle) says "No Partnerships" and "Not Connected." Menu option visible but not available.

I had a similar issue in that I could not get a portion of my device to sync, so I deleted my partnership and reinstalled ActiveSync. When I went to setup the partnership again, it told me that my device name is already in use, and I am not able use my current device name. I even redid a new partnership with a new device name, and all would be fine, it just BUGGED me that I couldn't reuse my old device name. ARGH.

What I found was that under C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME_HERE\Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles

You will find your device name. Be careful, as it is a hidden file. Even if you have your explorer checked to look for and display hidden and system files, it may not show it on a search. Delete this folder, and all should work.
