Current Palm Owner wanted to switch to Axim...

Hi All,
Currently I am using Palm pDA, Sony Clie. I am quite happy with it. But Wi-Fi feature and price of Axim attacted me. But before switching I have few questions. I am hoping to get some informataion regarding these questions.
1. Does Axim 30 has any software where I can store important information like details about Credit Cards in password protected area? I mean does it have any software which allow me to set privacy per record basis. Plam has something called Memo wher I can set if perticular memo is private or not.
2. Does Axim has type nay where on screen feature or it has perticular area on screen to type like some Plam?
3. How is multimedia application like MP3 player, movie player and picture viewer etc.
4. Does it have IR port?
5. I am using plam for last 4 yrs and have lot of information in it. Is there any way I can Xfer to Axim? I know how to Xfer contacts and calender. I am asking about Memos.
6. I read many -ve things about Axim Wi-Fi. Is it really that bad or just getting the settings right is complicated?

Thanks a lot.

1. I'm sure they do. Check out www.pocketgear.com and see if they do.
2. There is no designated grafitti area like on palm. They have different ways you can write on it, either through the keyboard, transcriber, ect.
3. Multimedia is where the axim shines. Depending on the model, you can get movies to play at full frame rate, mp3's are loud, pictures crystal clear.
4. Yes, an IR port is on it. It's commercial grade so can be used as a remote control with the right software.
5. Yes, you can transfer, but you need a program to do it. If you sync with outlook, your good to go, but if you don't you need to use Intellisync to transfer everything from palm desktop to outlook.
6. I have enjoyed my experience with wi-fi on the axim, and I'm sure others would say the same. It connected very easil to my neighbor's router (with their permission of course) and I've had no problems.

I just switched from a Palm to the Axim X30h, so here goes...

1) I used SplashID on Palm and am using that on PocketPC as well since it password protects credit card numbers etc. Also has a desktop companion to allow for desktop syncing editing of entries. It's not free but I highly recommend.

2) You can do both! Transcriber/Calligrapher will let you write anywhere on screen, but it also has a couple of input options (called Block recognizer and letter recognizer) more like what the Palms use that have a writing area at the bottom of the screen. I would also recommend trying Decuma Onspot since most Sony's came with that and the transition would be almost zero.

3) The built in MP3/Video player is a version of Windows Media Player. It works great for MP3 and WMA and streaming audio, but it's video is a little limited. I use Beta Player for video, it's free and works great.

4) yes

5) You can copy your memos into Outlook notes and they will sync. I used a prog that synced my memeos from palm to outlook anyway, so they were synced right to my axim without any effort.

6) I haven't had to set anything up on the Axim's wifi. It just works. In fact, I turn wifi on at home and it automatically connects and I can do a wifi ActiveSync without making any new settings.

I just switched from using a Clie NX80 to a Axim X30H. This was my first pocket pc.
1. I used ewallet on the Clie and now use the pocket pc version of it on the Axim to store passwords and credit card info. You will find that some of the 3rd party Palm OS application developers also make pocket pc versions of their apps. If not there are pocket pc equivalent versions for most Palm OS apps.
2. The latest pocket pcs have 4 ways you can enter text directly on it. 2 use a dedicated virtual graffiti type area methods, or a dedicated popup keyboard, or one where you can write anywhere on the screen.
3. Multimedia apps. are excellent on the pocket pcs. Most would say better than Palm OS pdas.
4. Pocket pcs also have IR ports. I use mine for syncing, data transfer, and for remote control apps.
5. I do not know of a way to transfer Memos. Contacts you can beam directly but the Calendar you can not beam but can sync them if you have them in Outlook.
6. I think setting up WiFi on a pocket pc is about the same, if not a little easier, as setting it up on a Palm pda.

I took me a while to get used to using a pocket pc after also using a Palm OS pda for 4 years but I think pocket pcs are more powerful and pc like than a Palm OS pda.
The Dell Axim X30H is a great unit considering it's features and price. I really enjoy it and do not really miss the Clie. The only feature I really missed was the camera so I bought a 1.2m pixel SD camera for my Axim which was inexpensive and works great.
Good Luck and I hope this helped.

I think they are indicating above is that you shouldn't fight, but switch. Most of the problems with the X30 are due to the normal learning curve, and exaggerated because this site tends to be used to solve problems, rave about successes. CE is so much more flexible than the palm os.

Short answer: NO

AKAJohnDoe: This thread is from `04. I don't think anyone is still around to read your answer about memos!
