Difference Between "Internet" and "Work" for WiFi Settings

Hi guys-

Exactly what is the difference between Internet and Work when setting up wireless connection? I noticed if I choose Internet, I can browse the Internet with no problems however I can't connect to an network shares (it says I need a VPN connection). If I choose Work then I can connect to network shares however I have no Internet. Is there any way to get both at the same time?

I apologize if this has already been answered -- I couldn't think of the right thing to search for without getting a thousand hits.

I think internet should be chosen if you're at like Starbucks or something using a WAP. Work should be chosen if you're at home using a wireless router and want to stream media and be able to browse the shared drives (as well as get on-line).

If you check under the proxies tab for work, there is a checkbox for "use internet"...so you also browse the web.

I only got my X30 Thursday , so I could be wrong here...also checkout Silent Knights utility to turn off the X30's wifi power management...big help with mysterious dissaperance of connectivity (when everything is setup right and working one min, not the next)

Choose Work for everything (this gives you access to file shares) and in those places where you need Internet access too, make sure that you have ticked the "This network connects me to the Internet" checkbox in the proxy server settings.

Here's my understanding or the "Work" vs. "Internet" settings. M$ came up with these terms in PPC2000 (maybe even before) at a time when most people used dial-up at home and LAN connections at work. The Internet (and now "My ISP") usually works with a direct connection to an internet server such as you have with with a dial-up connection or the use of a proxy server. "Work" generally is the best setting when you have a local area network, which many people now also have at home with broadband connections and wireless routers.

I must say I've never been willing to spend the money to connect to T-mobile at Starbucks but I suspect is also acts as a LAN in which case "Work" would be the proper choice. It's probably less important there since you probably aren't likely to be connecting to your PC for ActiveSync or folder shares, and this is where the difference usually shows up.

When I check this and click OK, it doesn't remember the setting. I go right back into it and it's now unchecked. Am I missing something?

Thanks again!

Got it! I had to go to the Advanced tab and tell "All programs that connect to the Internet..." to use the new setting.

Thanks for everyone's help!

What happens when you open up IE? Do you get a message saying something like "Change proxy settings"? If so, follow the instructions above. If that's not the case, how do you know you're connected? Do you have decent green bars at the bottom-right? Also, if you're using MAC Address Filtering on your router, make sure your Axim's MAC address is entered into the access list.

To help you configure your Axim and your network consult IkeHiker's WiFi Guide at www.wifi.aximsite.com

Best of luck! :approve:

Go to Start / Settings / Connections, then Tap on the Connections icon and go to the Advanced page, tap on the Select Networks button and select Work from the first combo list (by default it is set to My ISP) so that all programs that connect automatically will choose the Work connection to connect to the Internet.

didnt know the x30 did 11g, thought it was only 11b, is the linksys back compatible with 11b? automatically? or do you have to tell it to do 11b and 11g?

I use a different 11b hub/router -belkin.

It's supposed to be backwards compatible. I don't think that you have to tell it, as far as I know.
