i heard alot of talk about sd card write and read speed. i heard some speed like the slowest 8x and the fastest 32x? i heard there is a 1 GB card from kingston that was $67...but some ppl said it was 8x speed...and that y it was so cheap. my question is, does it really matter? can my axim really utilize the 32x speed over the 8x speed? and when you buy a sd card from sandisk or kingston or whatver...i dont see where they advertise what speed for that card? what speed is the maximum now a day for a 1 GB card? thanx.
I'm thinking that the speed shouldn't matter too much for the axim itself, but more for transfering/deleting files onto the card.
Here is another question: Is transfering data through the USB cable onto the sd card in the axim fastest, or would it be faster to use a dedicated memory reader/writer?
I would say that by experience if you are running something exclusively from the SD card, like music, and the speed is at 8X it will be OK. The difference is when you are tranfering files manually or through a software to the card. It will take longer to have this done.

It is the fastest way to transfer file to the card.

i can answer ur question...i have a card reader...yes it make a heck of a difference! copy files thru the card reader is alot of faster than usb cable! if u thinking about copying large file like more than 25 MB or bigger...u should think about getting a card reader.
now can anyone answer any of my question above? what about watching movies...does the 32x over the 8x speed make any difference? or playing games that was install on the sd card?
8x speed should be fine for Axim use, but you will get faster transfer speeds with the faster cards when using a card-reader or other device, like if you use the same card in a digital camera.
Fastest card out now is the Lexar Ultra II 80x and their 2GB card should be available around the end of the month, price around $225

OK teh Card reader is the fastest. Viewing video is slower to load but after teh buffer is full the movies play without problem. This is the same with music. the storage buffer is the key but you still have to wait to load data to it and it takes more time if you have a 8X. Game is different as it is loaded to RAM but the refresh screen may be sluggish on 8X compare to a 32X.

my other question is...i see sandisk with their 1 GB...no where did i see what speed is their card...can anyone tell me what speed is their 1 GB card? and if the company like lexar, kingston or sandisk dont advertise the speed of their card...how do u go about finding the speed? thanx.
I agree with Frenchy, and this has been discussed in other threads, get the manufacturer's part number from the sale ad and search it in Google. You will usually find a review somewhere that mentions the speed of the card in either x or kb/sec.
The Sandisk card above seems to be older stock on clearance as it is not even listed on Sandisk's site any longer, and is missing the '32' in the part number.

Definitely with the dedicated card write will be faster than using it thru the axim. i found that sometimes with bigger files it may not fully upload to the sd or have errors. i then bought a 8 in 1 lexar media card reader and it makes a HUGE difference. not to mention it also helps that i can use it when i have other cards such as CF memory stick as well from cameras ands what not. for the price of one it isn't too shabby...about $30 CDN so for the much better reliabilty and Increase in speed it is definitely worth the investment

I checked their website and no talk about speed on this card. Fast transfer rate is mentionned that's all. I do not work for them and can't assume the resposibility of saying it is for sure 8X or lower as it may be 10 or 12 but the fact that it is not mentionned anywhere in the spec sheets means to me that it is slower than other 1Ghz advertized at 32X or more. The cheap price also is an indication of the lower transfer speed rate. It will be enough for some users but not for other. I have a 512Mb 32X and I wouldn't go lower. Hope this help, sorry I couldn't come with a real speed on this one.
