Pocket PC Slow start-up?
I've had my X30hi for a while now. My wife has one too. I switched from PALM to PPC and love the pocket pc operating system, except for one thing: GOD, IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO BECOME USABLE ONCE TURNED ON. With Palm, you turn on your unit and your ready to write. With Pocket PC, it's like you have to wait a good 15 seconds for things to load everytime you turn it on. This happens even when the device is set at 624Mhz. It's so annoying. Is it like this for everyone? When I turn on my PPC, I want to start writing or browsing RIGHT AWAY! I don't want to have to wait for the device to "become ready". After that first little while, the Axim is blazing fast.
I'm trying to figure out if maybe I have software on my Axim that's causing this or if this is the case with all Pocket PC's? (I hope it isn't!!)
Please let me know.
Thanks

What do you mean, after a reset or after turning it on? If it's after just turning it on, then it's software. If it's after a reset, that's perfectly normal, especially if you have a lot of programs installed.

It's after simply turning it on. Funny thing is that my wife's does the same thing. EVERY TIME I turn the power on, I have to wait 10-15 seconds. If I don't wait and just start "clicking" on stuff, nothing happens.

It's not a Axim problem...It's a pocketpc software problem. I had the same problem with my IPAQ 2210.

That's what I thought Vino. Microsoft! Figured it just has to "load stuff" for a few seconds before it becomes usuable. I've tried 3 pocket pc's and they all did that. I like PPC a lot better than Palm - but this issue is definately annoying. Most of the time, I want to quickly assess information. I always find myself saying "hold on, give me a few seconds while my PPC starts up". :o(

Mine does the exact same thing. I have several applications loaded in the Today screen though. I don't remember it being as long of a load time when It was first new. Also, you could try to take programs from your start up folder.

Definitely 3rd party software....I have a new X30 high and run at 624mHz....when I installed Battery Pack Pro, it took 10-15 sec to load. When I uninstalled it, my Axim went back to normal, meaning immediate start up and use
good luck

This is not a microsoft problem. You must have something installed that is running in the background that slows it up as you turn it on. The thing about solid state media which your PPC uses is that it is fast with no moving parts and virtually no seek time. The instant you press the button on TOP of the ppc it should be useable. If you are SOFT RESETTING the device then it has to run thru the bootloader and run any programs specified by the bootloader and the any programs in the startup folder.
Don't mean to talk down to you on this.. you may be a rocket scientist for all i know but, I wanted to make sure you are aware that a 10-15 second start time is typically right for a soft reset but to just press the on button and wait is pointing to a bad something something.

Mine was slow loading also. But when I uninstalled battery pack pro and a couple of other programs it loads faster now.

Some apps, mainly today screen plugins, will slow down the startup process. I have Battery Pack Pro installed and have not noticed a decrease in startup speed. I suggest you check your \Windows\Startup folder on your Axim. I remove any files from this folder, and have yet to have an issue. Make sure you copy the files in this folder to BIS or SD card before deleting them, just in case you may need them down the road.

The problem wasn't present when I was doing a soft reset.
Alright, I did a hard reset and reinstalled MOST of my programs manually. I'm happy to report that the "start-up" issue seems to have been solved. So far so good. I can turn it on and start using it pretty much right away. Thanks to all of you for your suggestions!
