How do you just open a file in Windows Media Player 9 series? There's "Playlist" and "Tools" at the bottom, neither of which has the option to just open a single file to play.
I just use file explorer and navigate to the song on my SD card.

That's fine for some files. But I have some files that seem to have no association for them. When I tap them, a message comes up telling me to run the application first, and then open the file from within the application.
Well WMP for Pocket PC only plays MP3,and WMA files. I bet those unassociatted files aren't one of those. Here's a link to BetaPlayer, it can play lots more file formats, supports plug-ins for new formats and it's free.
If you are sure your files are MP3 or WMA then you can associate them with this other nifty freeware app.

how do i find the file association? When i tap on an mp3 file, nothing happens. I have gsplayer and wmp9 on my Dell x30h.
Have you made GSPlayer your default MP3 player? If you'd ike GSPlayer to play all MP3s, just check the MPEG box in Tools | Options | Associations
Otherwise there are lots of ways to change associations. A registry editor works, if you know how to use it. Resco Explorer has an association dialogue. Tillanosoft's Pocket Tweak works well. There is no 'native' tool for this, except for a hard reset.
Gerard,
Thanks for the info. I checked GSPlayer and the mpeg is checked and sure enough I have the file association and the audio plays when I tap on it.
I think that I was trying to tap a file on my PC to play on the Axim. I take it I need a different player to do that?

I know nothing about streaming from a local PC. I don't use networking that way; prefer faster boot time on the PC, but also almost never have the PC on. Still, I do stream M3U feeds using GSPlayer. NASA news, stuff like that. Since those are the same extension as GSPlayer's playlist files, just a tap in PIE opens the player and starts playing.
Well, I have audio and video files that play fine on my PC, but I get an "Unknown File Format" message when I try to play them on my Axim. And I have GS Player, WMP 9, BetaPlayer, and PictPocket Cinema. One video file in particular will play in Real Player on my PC, but not at all on my PDA. Even RealPlayer for Pocket PC won't play it.
There are hundreds, possibly thousands of types/codecs used for audio/video encoding. Playback on any device depends upon matching codec/bitrate/filetype capabilities on the player device. As media are constantly updated, but not consistently, one must expect that a portion of downloaded files simply will not play on all computers. The choice is yours: become expert in re-encoding media via lots of hours chasing links and testing software, or move on, finding other files which actually work with the limited range of software for PPC.
