I don't know how it happened, but it seems that I have accidently deleted a portion of the Windows directory.
My programs folder is completely empty, as is the games folder. The only folder that is intact is the settings folder. I had to install a third party file explorer to see what was left on the system.
So, how do I get back Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, the games, and all the other factory installed programs? I don't care about my data, I have that on my PC. The owner's manual doesn't mention a restore operation. Please tell me there is a restore program on the CD!
Just do a hard reset and teh factory settings will be back on. If this deosn't work you will have to run the ROM update A05 or whatever version you would like to be at.

Okay, so a hard reset will restore all the factory installed software? I wouldn't have guessed this!
You can't actually delete anything that is in the system ROM (not without some serious 3rd party software anyway). When you "delete" a file, the OS just makes note of it and considers the file deleted. This is how CE allows minor updates to the OS without having to re-write the ROM every time.
When you hard-reset the device, the OS loses its info on all of the changes you made, which restores any files that were deleted or overwritten.
um what that just back up what he did and make the problem again???
A restore generally doesn't erase things... it will install what isn't there and over-write what is. Regardless, a backup is worth doing as a 'just in case' preventative measure... with no backup the data is gone for sure, with a backup it's there if needed, and should restore cleanly. It's a whole lot more convenient to have a backup that you can't use than to be wishing you had one when you don't! :approve:

I disagree, at least in that context. Making backups is extremely important, but using backup software may be a wasted effort. Backup your info manually -- this is the best method for making sure you don't get hosed. Also, make sure you keep all of your install apps so you can re-install should your device need to be hard-reset.

Hey! BV, This is a very interesting comment. Where did you get this information from?

Are you looking for me to quote a source? I'm not sure what you are asking for.
No you don't have to. I was just wondering where you got the info from as it is a very smart way of dealing with the hard reset process. I am doing a set of FAQ and wanted to add this info to it and would like to make sure that it is correct.

I'll see if I can find some documentation and post a link. As far as the info being correct, you can try it yourself to see that it works. For example, I absolutely hate the "Pictures" application, so I always delete the icon from the "Programs" folder. This removes the icon but does not actually modify the ROM.
