Crackling Speaker After A05

Since updating my ROM to A05 I have a crakling sound when playing audio. The only way around this is to turn down the master volume which of course makes the audio barely audible. Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on a fix? Thanks.

Built-in speaker works fine for me.
Did you restore backup after upgrade? Try hard-reset and re-perform your music playback (don't restore the backup) and see if you have same problem.

I did notice that with the A05 upgrade, WMP 10 volume level is a bit louder compared to the earlier version. But it works fine and did not experiencing in crackling sound.

A05, the X5 version (on my X5 of course) does what you're saying, if I understand you. Speaker or headphones or line-out to my stereo, I cannot go above about 60% without a lot of crackling/popping distortion. With PPC2002/A04 There was some slight static at about 97% and above, but that was too loud anyway.

Alarm sounds are also a mess, playing only bits of the WAV files then cutting off, harshly.

Don't know if this is at all relevant, but it is interesting to read of similar problems on a different device/same ROM ID.

Yeah, the popping sound is like that of a needle going across an old vynil record. I hear it when I'm listening with headphones and I try to crank up the volume.

I found an audio driver update from Dell released 01/27/2004:

Audio: Dell Audio driver update, Patch, Pocket PC 2003, English, Axim X5, v.1.00, A00

It says "Improving Audio function after system wakes up. "

I got this, my second Axim, back in July. I wonder if it already includes the patch.

I'll have to give it a try when I get back home.

DON'T!! Well, do it if you like, but be prepared to do a little work to get rid of it when you (most likely) find that it actually makes audio much worse. For my X5 (and by the way, I am a little puzzled if perhaps you aren't using an X5 as well) the patch from last winter made the crackling/popping worse, and once it dropped the volume to about 1%, resisting any and all attempts to bring it up at all until I soft reset.

Getting it uninstalled involved using Resco Explorer (others might work) to rename the wavedev.dll to wavedev.old, soft resetting, then deleting that DLL. This brought the ROM version of the DLL out of hiding, making audio come back to just 'really bad' instead of 'impossible to use at all'. Go ahead and try, but I'd recommend a full Sprite Backup first, just in case...
