Installing Programs on SD Card

I found the answer to my original question- about installing programs/apps onto an SD card. But I also have a desktop memory card reader device that is much much quicker than the Pocket PC install onto the SD card when onboard my Axim. Is there anyway to run the install through the card reader?

Thanks!!

Technically yes. Just copy over the .cab file via the card reader. Once it is copied over, reinsert the SD card into your Axim, find the file, and click on it to install the program :approve:

almost perfect, except that you can't specify where u want to install when u click on the cab file - unless u did some tweaking or use a third party cab installing handler, like CabInstl by S_K

CabInstl rocks. I've gotten so I am extracting the CABs from EXE installs, copying the extracted CABs onto my SD card and Installing from there. I have CabInstl associated with all CABs and I check the box to NOT delete the CAB. Also, I used my desktop PC to create a Word document that list all the serial #s for the progs that require them. Then I copied the Word doc onto my SD card as well. This way, if I am ever out in the field and have to do a hard reset for whatever reason, I can reinstall apps without the use of my PC. Pretty cool, huh?

I have a 512 card in mine and I have all my games and more importantly my sprite back up program installed on it. That way if I have to do a hard reset it is not a huge hassle.

I just use the Dell Backup Utility. It's free, and what does Sprite do that the Dell won't? I mean all I ever do is a full backup. In fact I keep two full backups on my SD card. Everytime I do a full backup, I alternately overwrite them. That way, I am not overwriting my ONLY backup in case something goes wrong during the backup process.

For a start, you can choose to backup also the perm storage (ie bis); scheduled backups; partial restores; compression on backup; passworded backup files;battery triggered backup;network backup;etc

I also do a back up to my PC each week. Doubling my chances of keeping my memory.

other than being able to install a program from a card, is there any benefit to doing a cab install vs a desktop exe?

I love the ability to install directly from cab files, without the exe. I think that developers shouldmt even release exe files, they just clutter up your pc. I was about to sell my pocket pc because I hated the fact that I had to install everything on my desktop in order to install it on my pocket pc.

The only problem I have now is that I cant find a windows program to extract cab files from .exe files.

Any suggestions?
