What to do with a brand new x30

Hi, I'm new and I have been overwhelmed by the knowledge and generosity of the members of this site. As I count the minutes tick by for the distant shipping of my 30h, I am curious if any 30 users out there would mind sharing what they would do with a brand new Axim if they could go back, knowing what they know now.

What programs would you install and in what order?
Which programs would you avoid?
Which accessories were wastes and which do you wish you had purchased sooner?

As they say, "hindsight is 20/20" and I am sure many of us could benefit from the knowledge and experience of so many of you...

In addition, I think it would be great to hear some reminiscent stories.

"If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."

Have you examined the various software forums here at Aximsite? Also, browse the MyPDA for various users and learn what they are running with their Axims.

For accessories, I should get the thumb keyboard for a little less then 20 dollars on the dell site. For apps, I use the built in ones for PIM and bought MorphGear(emulator, do a search!). Like they said, just look around and see what they got.

Check my sig. Under "Loaded with:". Much of what I have is free stuff. I am still looking for PIM program and PIM plugin for Today screen(leaning towards Pocket Informant and Pocket Breeze from what I have read on aximsite recently). I have only had my Axim for a lil more than a month.

If I just got a new x30 and only had time to install 2 programs before heading out...I would install Pocket Informant and Pocket Breeze for sure. Check MyPDA over to the left to see all the software I use. PI and PB are the top two though.

I would definately have purchased an Innopocket metal case and a Belkin Thumbboard right away too (Belkin is only on the Dell site...)

GSPlayer is nice for me. I use that program to play back music I have on my SD card. This, along with good Sony earbuds allow me to play very clear and yet decently loud music at 4% volume (the lowest my Axim goes). If the earbuds are a half inch away from my ears, I cannot hear them AT ALL in an ultra quiet computer lab. Therefore, you can bring music into any environment and not bother anybody.

Trust me, I was worried at first about doing that (after all, it is a QUIET lab), but I ran into NO problems. The key presses and mouse clicks in the lab are more bothersome to people than my earbuds, I bet. Also, the chief annoyance is cell phones, what I have is hard to notice at worst.

Also, GSPlayer allows for me to make one of my buttons into a hold and turn off screen button. When off hold, the screen is on, however I can randomly select a song of pause/resume playback. I use the jog wheel for all of this which works well with my case. Therefore, I use my belt clip and have smooth operation.

Another thing I use my Axim for is taking email and websites on the go. I use AvantGo and GMail (by turning Pop on, downloading with Outlook, and then syncing the e-mail with the pocket pc).

Above is what I use on a pretty much daily basis. I sometimes read documents, play games, jot down reminders, check the calendar, check and complete todos, and generally get an overview of my day... that and read the quote of the day...

Those few things should get you started. Look around the pocket pc freeware sites... a few are listed below...

See if any software interests you... Both sites have reviews, they should be helpful as well.

I'm pretty new myself, but here's my thoughts.
Must haves:
0) IE favorites setup for aximsite tutorials and forum search:approve:
1) Pocket Plus
2) Pocket Breeze
3) Sprite Backup
4) Upgrade file explorer - I use GSFinder(free), Resco is the best IMO but costs $30
5) WhereIsMyRam? (free)
6) Bizzdev NetUse (free)
7) betaplayer and gsplayer to replace WMP (both free)
8) TextMaker so you can edit Word docs on your PPC without ruining them (Pocket Word stinks)

Bought it but regret it:
1) Pocket Informant - overly complicated and too busy to suit me. Sometimes I get a headache just trying to setup a appointment. I hope I get used to it eventually.

The Things I do!

Well, I am new to owning a X30H (about three weeks now), but after much research on this site and others, and a lot of testing and playing around, I am comfortably using a variety of programs daily. I travel a lot for business, and must say that I cannot believe I traveled so frequently without a Pocket pc for so many years. Anyhow, just took a quick flight to Toronto this weekend and this is how I passed my time during the journey.

1) Finished my work email online at the airport (free wifi), while it was plugged into an outlet in the lounge.
2) Played a game of scrabble on the plane, while waiting to take-off
3) During the flight, watched an episode of Scrubs
4) Listened to some MP3s while I killed some Snails (fun game)
5) Worked on a budget for a project proposal in pocket excel

And that was all done in a two hour journey. My regular battery was down to about 25% remaining by the end of the flight (battery plus pro). I figure that I am due to buy a larger battery replacement or two for trips to Africa and Asia.

Cheers!

Think Protection

My first purchase would be a screen protector. You’ll kick yourself if you damage your screen. Then a SD card or two because when you start buying or downloading free programs, some will have the option to load onto a SD card leaving your main memory free. This gives you more flexibility to put programs where you want them.

Programs I use and love;
- eWallet (You need someplace to store info you don’t want others to see)
- I got Agenda Fusion because I wanted to spruce up my Address book and calendar from the basic that come with the X30.
- List Pro because I like to keep my projects, shopping lists and Hot Wheel Collection organized.
- POdometer to keep track of my gas mileage in my car.
- PhatPad so I can draw
- Pocket Stars because I love looking at the stars
- Bejeweled – great game

I have many other programs but I don’t use them all that often.
