New Axim, A05, My First Few Days....

First, I am new to Axim, was one of the first site I found when searching to buy an Axim and you people here are great! I'm glad to be a member now :approve:

I got my Axim 3 days ago, Friday. I played around with it a lot over the weekend and I noticed a few things that maybe someone here might shed some light on.
1) Speed - I used to have a Jornada 568, and let me tell you that thing worked like a charm. So when I got my Axim X30 High I had high hopes. One thing I noticed off the bat is the Axim seems to lag sometimes. Example.. I like putting a password on my PDA so every time I turn it one it needs a 4 digit password. Well, if I turn the unit on and try to type right away, nothing happens. I have to wait about 2 sec's then it will let me put in the number. Now this doesn't always happen (like it's fine now) but I would say about 3 out of 5 times it does. This seems to also happen if I were to open a bunch of program and close them by taping the "x" that (which I have another question on) closes the program. Then when I press the Home button it seems to take a bit to load. I'm probably a picky person and this isn't a big of deal, I just used my Jornada so much and it seemed to never slow down, I rarely had to soft reset it too. I was just wondering if other people seem to notice a lag.
I also noticed an option to set the speed of the pda. Would it run fast if I set it to always run at max or keep it where the OS sets the speed as needed.

2) Sound - After read a bunch of forms I decided to download the BetaPlayer so many people recommended. I'm a music freak (about 120 gigs of music ranging from Asia, to France, to America (Rap to Classical), to Russia.. and so on). When I play an MP3 in BetaPlayer before a track start I can hear some high pitch noises, which is the PDA reading the MP3 from the SD card. Is this normal with New PDA's? My Jornada didn't do this, but it also used a compact flash card so maybe its the SD card?

3) Power - I thought I had read somewhere that the Axim will turn the screen off when playing mp3's. The Jornada would turn the screen off (not just dimming it but turn the screen off). The Axim just Dims the screen but the screen remains on. Is there a setting of is this the way the new OS/PDA's are?

4) That "x" - I also thought I read that the new OS will close a program when you click on the x instead of just putting it in the background. I have to press the home button to open the Switcher Bar program to close any programs I have open. Is there an easier way to do this?

Sorry for the log post. Overall the Axim has been great though. Wifi and Bluetooth has worked flawlessly. BetaPlayer is great (I ripped a portion of The Muppet Show to watch while we were at the movie theaters waiting for The Incredibles to start, made the hour wait seem like 10 minutes) And its still a great organizer and mp3 player. Thanks for anyone taking the time to read this and I promise my future posts won't be so long

it's player dependent. the os itself doesn't know if there is mp3 played or not. if nothing happens it will go to sleep mode after a timeout, but players prevent this because the music would stop too. but they can manually turn off the screen. example in betaplayer you can assign a hot key for screen on/off.

And welcome aboard! It's a pleasure to have you here!

1. The slight "delay" is normal, just like when your own PC boots up and starts loading programs in the task tray.Or when you wake your PC up from Sleep Mode, it's a bit "groggy" right? So is the Axim. There's "lag" in the time you can use your PC- the Axim is no different. So don't fret.

What you CAN do to shave a second off the "wait" time is to clear out all unecessary programs that you don't want loading at the start by going into the StartUp Folder and deleting the shortcuts. REMEMBER TO DO A FULL BACKUP BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DELETE ANYTHING!!

2. I haven't loaded any MP3s on my new X30 High yet (I just received it 2 hours ago), but when I do I'll look into it. :approve:

3. YES, there is a way to turn off the screen while playing MP3s. Open up Windows Media Player, go to Menu -> Options -> Buttons and assign a button to "Screen Toggle". When the assigned button is depressed, the screen will be turned on/off accordingly. :)

4. There's no "easy way" to close out programs without downlaoding and installing a "Task Manager". But lucikly for you there are TONS to choose from like WisBar, ICBar, Resco: just to name a few. What these programs basically do is to allow you to make the "x" button truely close programs or selectively close out programs or all programs at once. You can also do what I do which is to copy a shortcut of Switcher Bar to the StartUp Folder so everytime I startup or soft reset my device, Switcher Bar is automatically loaded and there for immediate use.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you need any further assistance and enjoy your beautiful new Axim!

I use the "Switcher Bar", which came pre-installed on my Axim X30 High. You have to enable it by going to Start/Settings. Click the Systems tab at the bottom of the screen to find it. Once enabled you can use it to completely exit one program or all open programs. You have to re-start the switcher bar after every soft reboot. Haven't found a way to keep it on by default, though I suppose I could put it in the startup folder somehow?

I would recommend leaving the processor set to Max. I haven't been happy with the auto setting as I've found the Axim seems to run in power saver mode more often than not, affecting performance.

That was a great tip! I did it and works! So I can now obtain more music from a standard battery! Thanks a lot
