How to convert video files to smaller size?

I jsut a got an axim x3i. I have read many threads about dvd to ppc and how it only takes about 128mb for one whole dvd. I have many .avi files that I have downloaded that are about 200 mb a piece. I convert them to mpegs with a mpeg converter, because i have trouble playing .avi. Is there a way that I can lower the memory usage so i can bring more tv shows and videos with me on one card? I have a 512 card right now and I can only fit about two episodes on it. I don't think that is right. Any tips to help? I tried minimizing the resolution, but I don't know how small to make it. I still want it to show full screen panoramic. Anything will help because I am a noob! THanks!

Your answer was right on the front page and has been there for weeks now if not longer.

Hi jchiong1425 - welcome to the site :approve:

Good luck with your new 'toy' - you can ask any questions whenever you want - I can remember when I first got my PPC - I didn't even know what to search for - nevermind understand what people were saying

To go back to your original problem - why are you having trouble with your .avi's - what software are you using on you PPC?

Windows Media 9 encoder. WHICH IS FREE!

Can convert .avi to .wmv

It will allow for the best compression and quality for storage on a wmv and Windows Player was design with it in mind.

Its your best option.

I just upgraded to Windows Media Encoder 9. It has settings just for the Pocket PC, so you don't have to do much configuring. Just use the programs to convert your AVI to WMV. You can "compress" the file even futher to go as small as you want, but you will loose some video quality. Tweak the compression until you find one that's good and small enough for your tastes. :approve:
