My Sprite backup file won't restore - help!

I tried to connect to my wifi this morning and couldn't connect so I soft reset. I got some major system error messages and when all was said and done I had to hard reset which is a first for me. Now when I try and restore my Sprite backup file it states that it can't find the associated program to make it work and to try installing the program first. I thought the whole point of Sprite was that it didn't need the program to restore. What do I do now?

Since you obviously didn't use the self-extracting EXE format for your Sprite Backups, you will need to re-install Sprite before you can browse to and choose and restore from your backup file. You may install as a guest under Activesync, I believe, or you can browse in the PC to the C:\Program Files\Sprite Software folder and get the appropriate CAB file. Put a copy of that into the PPC, tap it, and it will install on the PPC.

In future, use the EXE backup feature, which includes the basic components of Sprite into the backup and makes it tap-launchable from a card or file store. You may also choose auto-naming by date, so that multiple backups may be stored in the same folder. And you may also choose to compress these backups, as this will save a lot of space. I usually keep at least a half-dozen such backups handy, just in case I need to go back to some particular date's files. Oh, and you can also schedule automated backups, and backup through Sprite's PC client via Activesync, and you may exclude files........

Well, I recently sold my laptop where I installed the program from (to get an Ibook). I've recently been synching from my desktop but that's not where I installed Sprite from. Can I install a trial version temporarily to restore from?

Ughhh, I'm not sure if the trial will restore, check their boards. I would think that it would, but I can't be sure. And as Gerard pointed out, always use the self-restoring header option.

I think the current trials give 10 days of backups, with infinite restores. Sprite isn't interested in depriving users of data restorations, whether they've paid or not, just in protecting themselves from free backup use.
