Change Language of ROM: how it works

Hi, I have just purchased a german X30 rom version A01(10190400GE) and tried to convert it to english. I followed all the instructions and used hex editor to copy the first 7 lines over to the english. I am getting "integrity check" error. From where to where do I have to copy the 7 lines does it include all of the data in lines 00 up to and inluding 60 or 70 and when I try to select all the lines it seems to leave the last hex unselected (in my file it b3 on line 60)

Hi,

all of you who are looking for a way to get an other language right now in May 2005 just read the following:

Start the Upgrade.
Make a Backup from your ROM.
Copy the first 100 Bytes in a Hex Editor from the Backup ROM file to the ROM file you want to install.
Rename this ROM file you changed before in *.RIS
Make a Upgrade to an other ROM File. (If there is no Upgrade avaible, try to backup an old ROM file. But this is not tested)

Now you can restore the changed ROM file instead of the old ROM File.

how do I know what 100 bytes is e.g is AA BB CC DD counted as 8 bytes. If I try it this way I get the error "You can only restore the ROM image to the same device it was saved from"?????

I'm planning on simply installing a freeware Russian keyboard software LEng Optima or QKeys, which apparently will be enough to "rusify" my X30 'High' (which I imagine that when ordered directly from Dell - it comes with an English ROM) - it will be enough to read, write, display in Russian will all be now, apparently, possible.

QUESTION: Why then would I wanna bother changing the English ROM to a Russian one?.. What will be the disadvantage of just changing the Regional Settings and installing the Russian keyboard software, leaving the ROM to remain English?

I think I tried about everything by nowand I would greatly appreciate any help!

I want to change my language from English to German.
First I tried the solution of the first post: I replaced lines 00-70 of the German file with the content of the english file.
I ALWAYS get an error message when trying to start the upgrade (entegrity check).

Secondly I tried the newer post, which suggests to take the first 100 Bytes from an old backup file (*.RIS) and copy them into the Germon ROM. After installing my PDA to a newer version I trie to backup to the modified backup file, but then I get the message that I can only restore a beackup from the very same device the backup file was created from.

Who can help me???
Is it that I wronlgly do the hex editing? (Using PSPad and the Hex Editor 3.0)
What do I have to do in order to change the language and overcome these hurdles???

with what tools de you modify the .rom file ? (hex editor)
is it the same modif as for your x30 ???
how many characters to copy ?
what are the risks of flashing with modified roms ?

Hi, I finally figured out a solution to the integrity check problem:
Here's what you have to do, besides what is describe din the first post in this forum:

1. After you replaced the 7 first lines in the IMG file, go to the Folder "C:\Dell\Drivers\R8709" (or wherever you installed the english system update).

2. Open the "SETUP.INI"-file in a text editor.

3. In line 15 change the expression "LOADDEFAULT=1" to "LOADDEFAULT=0"

4. Now Start the setup.exe file. What it does now, is that it allows you to manually select the IMG file you want to update your Axim with. Just go ahead and do so. Now it won't give you the integrity check error


What you already are aware of: YOu are doing some quite serios changes to your Axim. Be cautious and do it on your own risk!

Is this procedure right for my Axim x50v too(lookin' the hex editor seems it is: the first 7 lines contain a sort of "header" and about 2 lines are blank at the end, but I'm worried of making problems too early!!)?

Sorry, I only have an X30 and I found this solution just by trial and error. I'm afraid you'll have to find out yourself.

Hello Nagus I'm from POLAND maybe you too? I have the same problem that you .I can't upgrade my german system to english because I have the nevest version of German rom and I dont need upgrade this.I'm looking for older rom A00 not A01 and want to restore this old rom to PDA , and next to upgrade modified rom A01.


I have other question:

1. In unpacked files I have HBoot.exe ,I copied to Dell and run.PDA waiting for download image from PC.Maybe it's answer how download image without setup.exe Dell's?

2. I think that's possible to manual change the date and version in first 100bytes of rom to newer and ignore that's don't need update.

That's can be good think?

actually I'm from Germany and my problem was to change the language from English to German, not the other way around.
I have no idea what the file HBoot.exe does, nor do I know anything about manually changing the date and version.

However, maybe the little trick I described on post 22 will help you.

Hi, On the German to English Rom Update. I had the integrity error aa well, my solution was to only edit up to the rom name in ASCII, not the full seven lines.

AABBCCDD would be 4 bytes.
