Change Language of ROM: how it works

Hi,
after searching hours and hours in the web for a solution of the "change ROM language" question, here is how I fixed it:

ok, we have one english speaking X30 (version A02) and want upgrade (or downgrade ) it to german.

First you'll need the english (R87096) and the german (R89371) ROM update. Extract both in separate folders.

Second seach for the image file of your Axim model:

Non-combo models:
P16A_ALL_N_10070400EN.IMG (english)
P16A_ALL_N_10190400GE.IMG (german)

Combo models:
P16A_ALL_C_10070400EN.IMG (english)
P16A_ALL_C_10190400GE.IMG (german)


Third copy the first 7 lines (from x00 to x70) from the english ROM-image file (N or C) to the german ROM-image file respectively.

Fourth overwrite the english image with the german one.

Fifth Start "setup.exe" from the english archive with your Axim X30 in the (attached ) craddle and it will be updated with the german ROM.

In Step 3, how do I edit the image file, which application can I use?

Hi,

yes, you're right. By overwrite I meant you have to rename and to copy the modified image.
I used the HHD Hex Editor (it's easy and it's freeware).

Thanks, got it. Do you have any opinion about the alternative method where you place the image on the SD card and do a special reset? Same end result or is one 'safer'.

I tried also the SD-card method but without any success. After several hard resets by pressing the "magic"-buttons, the system did never boot from the SD-card.
And from the regular update procedure only the original ROM setup (english in my case) worked. So I tried to replace the ROM images and it worked; the setup does not complain about the language-change.

Hi Alex, I have been trying your method above. After Hex editing the English A05 and replacing Header with German A01 (Lines 00-70) I get an "Integrity Check" error message after selecting Rom Update, which does not allow me to proceed. Checked the Hex length before and after, they both finish on 200. Any clues here?

Solved! Ok I am reasonably sure it was just where I chose the edit point. From 00 to the end of the Rom Update version in the ASCII section did it. (Not 00-70 ... but maybe it was some other factor and I just got better at editing a file at Hex level)
I also found it handy to move the English Language folder alongside the german under ROMS and modify the location in SETUP.INI file. (Just meant no messy renaming of the image file).

Hooray, sigh of relief, went well.

Hi,

I've been trying this procedure to go from English to Japanese ROM, but although I didn't get the integrity check error, the process stops because the setup program sys I already have that version of the ROM installed, so I don't need an update! Argh! How can I work around this?

Hi Manolo,

it's obviously that you cannot change the language without upgrading the system. On my Axim was installed an old version (A02 English ROM, Release Date: 07/08/2004) and both downloaded ROM updates were real updates (A05 English ROM, Release Date: 10/14/2004 and A01 German ROM, Release Date: 11/19/2004). So anyway I had could install one of these ROMs.
Did you have updated your system in the past? If so you could reinstall your old ROM from an backup and try the procedure again.

IMHO the setup programm checks if your Axim needs an update at all; if not, it simply stops the process.

Hi Alex,

What I ended up doing was to flash the ROM to the Japanese version altogether, but going through the SD card magic button pushing procedure instead of ActiveSync - worked perfectly!
