The clostest you could get is whit outlook 2003 when you can minimize it to the system tray. That way it doesnt really look open but it is.
Not necessarily so. There's no reason why Outlook couldn't have a TSR element that launches at boot-up and remains active in the background checking for new messages and reminders even when Outlook itself is closed.

I am using Office XP (which has Outlook 2002) and it does not pop up for either new-email or appointment when it is closed. But one day by some freak accident I starting getting pop-ups for new emails and/or appointments, so I check in my task manager and saw that OUTLOOK.EXE was running under "processes" tab but did not see the Outlook application under "Applications" tab. I just do not know how this happened. So I tried rebooting the system, then starting Outlook and closing it, but never found the OUTLOOK.EXE process runnning, hence no more alerts for appointments.

So, in short, if we could find a way to start this process, it would work like in our Axim.

The only time I have ever seen outlook.exe open when the actual program wasnt, was when outlook crashes or closes down improperly.

Thanks.
As long as you have your Axim in the cradle and it is connected through ActiveSynch, you will get Outlook pop up reminders. Outlook has to be running for you to get the reminders. If you are connected through ActiveSynch outlook is "running" in the background (check the task manager and you will see outlook.exe running).

Hope this helps

Outlook.exe will be running in your task manager if your Axim is connected through ActiveSynch, even when Outlook the program itself has not been launched.

The only solution I found, and which works flawlessly on my Outlook 2003 (and also previous versions of Outlook), is a small program called Outlock. Here's the link which leads you to the correct program... http://www.eldblom.dk/path/ .

I hope this helps.

After reading what you wrote, my post does sound a little silly. Like I said, I am new to Outlook, and I know MS has tied everything together, so I was not sure if there was a small "reminder" function that could load on startup.

this is really no big deal, since the axim will be with me at all times.

edit:

just like that link that was posted.. outlock... MS does not have something similar... or there is nothing in current development....
