Outlook Reminders When Outlook Closed

Tried posting this in "applications" with no luck...

does anyone know how to get reminders (alarms) when outlook is closed? I have searched and searched and can't find the answer. I am moving from Palm, and want to know if this is possible...

Thanks.

If you mean for emails, as long as you are sync'd, the email account you have chosen will automatically look for emails as often as you tell it to chek in the setup wizard. Alarms for calanders or tasks will automatically go off as well.

I do not use outlook for e-mails... sorry for not making clear. I wanted to know about appointments for calendar. I do not keep outlook open, but when I do open outlook it sends a bunch of past appointments.

I just want to know if there is a "check mark" I can check to allow something to load on startup (not the full outlook package) in order to get alarms to go off.

right now if I set an alarm and close outlook, the alarm to go off.

Thanks.

OG

You don't need to. All you need to do is set the date & time when you make the appointment. It should automatically remind you at the right time. Mine works great. Most people I think upgrade to an aftermarket program like Agenda Fusion or something like that.

DSmith... I re-read my post... no, I am talking about outlook on the desktop. I don't even have an axim yet... waiting for my auctions to close to see which one I can afford (auctions close today at about 6 am). I am an x palm user trying to get setup on Outlook (desktop). So far, the alarms do not work when I close outlook. I tried searching MS without any luck and searching in outlook itself (which basically takes you to the MS website). I am lost... but I do not think this works with outlook closed.

Same goes with the desktop. You have tried to make the appointment with the date and time and it still will not "pop-up" when the correct time comes? Mine does with no extra actions needed. I will lok at work tomorow and chek it out and post if someone hasn't beat me to it by then.

No popup with outlook (desktop) closed. Once I open outlook it strings the appoints on the desktop. If I have outlook open, it will work.

I just tried a test of an Outlook appointment and it worked. I got a little box that popped on top of my browser window and a chime.

I think that there must be a problem with your installtion or settings. Are you selecting the "Reminder" check box checked? (I assume so since you said that you get a string of reminders, but start easy and work to the harder possiblities)

Another possiblity, set the appointment time to busy. That seemed to make a difference in test #2 for me.

Good Luck

Which versions of Outlook are you all using? I just tested it on my system--Windows 2000 and Office 2000) and it DID NOT work. Specifically, with my desktop version of Outlook closed I did not get a pop-up reminder for a meeting. I did get the reminder when I opened Outlook AFTER the meeting start time.

Here are a couple things to think about:

Outlook is 'running' as long as any Outlook window is open (or minimized). This means that it's running if you've opened, for example, an appointment or an e-mail message but closed the main application window.

Also, each time the Axim syncs to the Desktop it'll launch outlook if it's not already running. This will cause reminders to activate when outlook is seemingly closed.

I agree StanleyR1, i have to be running outlook and I have 2000 and 2003. Both act the same. I don't see any settings to allow it to set reminders when program is closed.

I have googled my way to death, almost. :)

I found one page (a blog, I think) that said outlook must be open.

Thanks guys/gals.

Outlook must be running to get reminders on the desktop. The only exception I have found is if your Axim is in the cradle and connected through Activesync, the reminders will come up even with Outlook closed because the hook to Outlook from Activesync is enough to trigger the reminder.

I was using Office 2000 and I have 2003...

I think the problem with my fantastically scientific test was that one of the Axims was in the cradle.

Sorry if I gave anyone unfounded hope

With Microsoft, all hope is unfounded.

I dont think i would dog microsoft with this one. How would your computer know if there was an appointment in a program that isnt even open. You get reminders on your axim because outlook is always open. Even with the axim "off" it isnt really off so outlook is technically still running. The clostest you could get is whit outlook 2003 when you can minimize it to the system tray. That way it doesnt really look open but it is.
