Syncing and 2 partnerships--What's the right way?

First of all, this is an awesome site. I've been amazed at the information that I've found here just in looking it over the last few days. Just some awesome information here. I'm glad to have a resource like this available to me as a new Axim 30H owner.

However, being the newbie that I am, I want to be sure I'm understanding the real deal on syncing to 2 computers (home and work). Here's my situation:

I'm a Palm convert (moving from a M505) and have started the dreaded migration to PPC. After some initial problems, I finally synced my Palm to Outlook, then installed Activesync and synced the X30 to Outlook to retrieve the info. Problem: I unknowingly installed the X30 with a Standard Partnership associated with 1 computer.

Later, I remembered that I wanted to use the unit at home too. So I purchased an aftermarket sync cable, installed Activesync on the home computer and synced. The first try, I did it as a guest and realized that was useless. So then I did it by installing a Standard Partnership (for two computers). This allowed the info to sync, but when I got back to work and tried to sync I had problems, of course, because Activesync at work is set for 1 computer.

So now, what do I do? Uninstall Activesync on both computers and reinstall at work first, making sure to set as Standard Partnership for 2 computers and following it up by doing the same at home? Will that get me straightened out?

Before I go any further, I am well aware that I can only sync one inbox (that'll be the one from work), but that's not a problem. I just want to get this set up right so that I don't have issues later.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff M

Welcome to the site! :)

Activesync on the desktop does not really care about if only one computer is going to be used on not. The problem is at the PPC. On the PPC end only two partnerships is supported. So here is the deal.

When you install Activesync on a computer and start to setup a partnership, Activesync will check the PPC to see if a partnership already exists. If no partnership exists then it will proceed with creating the partnership. If one already exists then it will prompt you whether or not you want to sync between two computers. If it finds two partnerships and you are using a new computer it will prompt you to delete one of the partnerships on the PPC.

In your case you will only need two partnerships on the PPC which is fully supported. So if you install and create a partnership for the first time at work then when you install and create a partnership at home it will ask you about syncing between two computers.

As you mentioned you can only sync the inbox with one partnership.

I'm in a similar situation except I screwed up and installed the home partnership first because I was so eager to use my new Axim. How do I remove this home partnership so I can first establish one at work (so e-mail works)?

It's under the 'File' drop-down menu.

But how will the Axim side know that the partnership has been broken? Remember, the issue is that I've already been syncing at home, and I need to remove this partnership so I can set the initial one up at work. It doesn't seem like removing the home partnership from only the PC will do the trick. There must be something on the Axim I need to do too.
