Installing ActiveSync without Cradle (IR / Bluetooth)

Greetings,

I've just taken my DELL Axim x30 overseas which I use mainly for all my contacts plus Wi-Fi emails etc but now I've just got myself a Sony VAIO I'd like to sync it. The only problem is I left my cradle with my PC along with anything else I could avoid brining - but this doesn't help me with ActiveSync.

Basically, I want to install ActiveSync or a comparable program for Outlook 2003 sync over a USB IR device or integrated Bluetooth. Has anyone done this before? What are the options short of buying a replacement cradle?

Cheers,
orbitalgroup

well, it depends. if your axim has b/t and your pc has b/t, you can sync it. just turn on your b/t on both devices. click on your b/t icon on the bottom right hand of the axim, click on b/t manager, click new and you'll see activesync via b/t. just follow the directions.

you can use irda, but it's slower. oh, since you have a new pc, it probably doesn't have activesync, so you can dl it from ms's website.

i really don't care for it, but my wife uses it to sync her ipaq, so yes it works. but she has to turn it on, and blah blah...all i have to do is just side my axim into the cradle and it's done.

I sync mine using IR every day using Active sync without any issues. It is a bit slower than using the cradle but it works great.

Basically I can't install activesync without it going thru the make new connection process and asking to put the device in the cradle, i need to get past that for it to work.

Yeah I did and I can't remember how I got around it. I think the trick was to build the serial connection between the PC and PPC via BT FIRST and then AS will detect it over the serial (BT) connection.

AS of course needs to know to check the COM port assigned to the PC's BT interface.

I'm trying to sync mine, but regardless of the activesync program, i use an Ir adapter via usb and the connection disconnects after a few seconds.
Any thoughts?

I really don't know what to say. Mine has worked since day one.... what are your settings for IR on your Ax? Maybe we have a difference in settings?

Since there isn't much to set:
Beam: Recieve all incoming beam.
When syncing remotely: Maintain connection.
My problem is before Active sync - I get the icon that a device is recognized via IR, but the connection disappears after a few second.

Look in wireless link in Control Panel in windows. You should be able to get icons for wireless activity and troubleshoot your hardware. Let mw know how it goes!
