I just brought a x30 and is still waiting for it to arrive. I just realized that most of my friends all have Palm. Meanwhile I am waiting for my x30, I am just wondering what are the major differences between Palm and PocketPC?
You can do alot more with PPC. Ill let somebody that knows alot more about it than i do give you the details. Trust me you are about to make your friends jealous. Movies and Internet browsing are two of the huge differences to me. JDH
I personally like PPC better.
But don't forget the third option: Linux.
I haven't used a Linux PDA very much, so I can't say very much about it. I have, however, used regular Linux a lot.

Linux PDAs? Are you serious? I haven't heard of them yet.
Both are good at what they do. Palm's are digital organizer's with little multimedia capablities (i.e. mp3, videos (which need to be converted to a proprietary format with built in or included software) Emulation is limited to NES and Gameboy, where both aren't very good and cost money. Organization is key with palm. Simplicity is a virtue in this case. PPC's are more multimedia oriented, IE mp3's, movies, complex games, emulation (you can even play your old ps1 games on your ppc!) Organization is still a factor, but it has a bit of a learning curve unless you are used to outlook. Synchronization is easy with both. In short, Palm is an organizer, PPC is a miniture computer.

P.S. I speak from experience. I own a Treo 90, Tungsten |E, and an X30 mid. I'm not just making stuff up! :)
I just got the x30 mid... moved from an Tungsten E (owned many palms). I believe I will return the x30 for a Tungsten T3 or T5. As others have said in this string it is all about what you need the PDA to perform... or how it performs in your life. My X30 came with all kinds of cases, two batteries, etc... but the x30 is simply huge when put side by side with a t3 or t5. Then the cases make it really huge.
I am going to keep for a couple of more days before making a firm decision. The OS is okay... nothing to write home about... think for my purposes I like Palm OS better, but I will keep the x30 for a couple of more days to confirm. For what I need, x30 does do input a lot better than palm.
I held a Tungsten T5 at circuit city X-mas eve and simply feel in love. I had the X30 there and the T5 was so small instead of feeling like a brick in my pocket, the t5 would feel like the te, which sometimes I had forgot it was in my pocket. The x30 is not heavy, just very thick, which causes a bulge in your pants pocket. I will give the x30 a couple of days to see if I change my mind.
edit: but with having to use outlook and the sync problems, I am leaning on returning the x30 for a t3 or t5.
It depends on your needs and computer savvy. My wife has a Tungsten E. It is a small, light and very easy to use organizer. She uses it to keep track of appointments for us and her mother and sister. She also keeps many notes on information that she tracks. She is not very computer literate and finds it easy to use. We also have some Excel files and street maps on it. I almost got a T3 or T5, but decided I wanted a "real" computer, so I got a X30H. I also have an original HP Jornada. I have used computers since the original IBM PC and have built 2 computers in the past, so I am somewhat computer literate. I am happier with a pocket PC.
There is one application where I think the Palm has an advantage. If you use Excel a lot, the full version of "Documents to Go" has much more capability than Pocket Excel. Basically, I think that the Palm has a slight advantage as a business tool and the Pocket PC is a better all-around computer.

i would agree here...i think the palm (of which i have had many including the best the th55 with build in camera and video) is better as a business machine due to far better and cheaper word processing programs.
ppc's are more integrated with desktop pc's and are generally better for multimedia.
but what has not been mentioned is that ppc's have a genuine operating system while the palm does not-consequently one can multitask or at least keep separate programs in memory on a ppc while with a palm you have to switch back and forth literally reloading each program each time you need it
