hi, i'm new to these forums, and i just received my x30. when i plug in a headset to listen to mp3s through wmp10, there is a hissing/crackling/snow (as on a tv) type sound in the background. has anyone had this problem? help is much appreciated
It's a fairly common and well known problem (search the forums).
My X30 has the same problem and after spending a lot of time searching for a solution I discovered that the bottom line is that your Axim is not an iPod.
A small workaround is to turn the master volume of the Axim right down and use a pair of headphones with a seperate volume dial, this tends to reduce the hiss somewhat.
YEs i have heard that this problem is common with some x30's, mine works fine, but some do that.
I think it has to do something with the wiring inside the device, i know in cars its not good to run your RCA (sound carrying wire) wire and Power wire near each other because this can cause feedback/static.
I wouldn't call it common a few people have complained on the boards but they always do about every device every time. Yes it exists but common, I don't think so.
Oh yeah, some help. Get headphones with a right-angle plug. This reduces lateral strain on your headphone circuit which can work wires loose causing static and eventual failure if enough lateral motion is applied. I had this happen to my Compaq iPaq 3975 when my Sony MDRV700 cable got caught on a railing. I had to send it to PPCTechs for repair. If your favorite headphones don't have a right-angle jack you can get an adapter with a volume control from Radio Shack.

Yeah...I need to get that volume control from Radio Shack. Is it on their site? I like printing stuff out and showing them since they never know what I am talking about...
My X5 and even refurbished one I was going to trade with still had that hiss noise. I had heaphones with it inline volume control but they broke so I will get these extensions. Then just go from their in buying headphones...
A lot of people had this problem with X5 but I am surprise to see it happen with X30. My uncle has an X30 an I will have to see if it has the hiss noise...

A work around is to get some earphones with a volume control and set the volume on the phones so that you can't hear the hiss.
You could send the Axim back, but there is no guarantee you get one without hiss.

I'm not sure... I'll check though. Be right back.
I didn't see them on their site but they're usually on the wall alsong with the extension cables and mini-plug to 2 mini-plug adapters when I go into a store. HTH
Found one on their site but it doesn't have the volume control

Most MP3 players I've heard have a better SNR (signal to noise ratio) than the PPCs I owned. I've yet to be impressed by the audio quality of any Dell PPC to date but I've yet to be disappointed by any iPAQ. With any product and with any ear, you will see some variation in quality but I'm least impressed by the audio on either the X50v or X30.
Have you tried X50mix yet? It does what iPaq audio does evcetp with more options. ;)
