Stanger Danger

I have a wireless router (Netgear) which has a WEP. Is it absolutly necessary to have an WEP, is an open network really that bad?

I would recomend it. Do you realy want to be allowing just anyone to connect to your network?

On top of WEP I suggest using MAC filtering.

LOL! I read that thread earlier today. Great read. LOL!

I would STRONGLY suggest that you use some sort of security, WEP Encryption, MAC filering, etc. Unless you live out in the middle of nowhere, COMPLETELY hidden from the outside world, you're going to have "unwlecome visiters" on your network, guaranteed!

If you don't mind some sicko downloading kiddie porn on your network outside your house, in his car, naked from the waist down, beating off to all sorts of illegal pictures, then by all means, go for it. If you don't mind some pot-head hack0rz stealing your identity along with all your banking and finiancial information, then, by all means, continue unprotected.

Dude, it's like sex: if you keep having unprotected sex, you're going to catch something REALLY bad sooner or later.

Suit up and protect yourself! :approve:

Hi JP. I've been traveling. I'm in Las Vegas right now. Haven't had time to get online. You know: "The City of Sin" and all. LOL!

I hope you've been well and you're not going online "unprotected". What would your mother think? :D

Hi, Hi, Frenchy! How's it going in the Great White North? I'm in the City of Sin. Warm as can be!

I'm on a friend's computer, but I turned on my Axim and picked up two of his nieghbors UNPROTECTED wifi networks. I need to go knocking on some doors and school some folks!

You staying with some friends or the hotels?

I have to say that Mandalay Bay is my favorite. The sand beach for their pool area is fantastic, and floating along in the artificial river is great relaxation.

Great responses, thank you all. The reason why I asked in addition to is that my Axim only works when I take off the WEP. Is this something others have experienced if so how did you work around it? BTW unprotected sex feels better & is safe when you are by yourself, (TMI) LOL

90% of the time the problem here is the key was not the same in the Axim as what you put in the router. 64 bit protection is just as secure as 128 bit. Drop it to 64 to make it easier to remember the WEP key.
