Page cannot be found situation

I have spent the last few days looking through the forums for information on how to prevent the dreaded 'page cannot be found' event when trying to get into a site on the internet. I am trying to get on the net while at work, through my VPN, I believe.

Unfortunately, I cannot remember half of what I've read.

Is there a tutorial someplace on how to fix this problem? Or can someone summarize all the different things to tweak to make it work?
