main memory vs built in storage

What is the difference between Main Memory and the Build In Storage. My Main Memory is getting full, so the lastfew programs I've installed to my storage card. Can the build in memory be used in the same way?

if it helps, you can think of BIS as a built in storage card that you can't take out.

I think that helps because it's just what it means

is there any performance benefit in keeping the BIS and main memory clear and storing progs just on the SD card, i.e. are the builtin spaces used as virtual memory.

Only main memory is "actively used" to run programs.

Built in storage is the built in Flash ROM in the Axim device. It's best for this space to be used for backup data or any other data you might not want deleted or lost.
There is a limited about of Flash ROM space depending on which model you have. The barebone X30 has a mere 5MB of ROM space and the X30M/H have about 30MB.
The Main memory is the RAM. It serves two functions. One is for use as regular RAM (like a computer) and the other is to store programs/data in the RAM.
Storing programs/data in RAM presents an advantage. Technically programs should load quicker, but since this is a PDA there might be minimal performance differences in having things stored in the RAM. Also, the data stored in the RAM is prone to data loss if your backup batt dies and your main one as well.
I think you should get a 256 meg SD card or a 512 meg. They arn't that expensive these days.

if your pda dies the data in the built in storage will not be erased the data in main memory will

Well I do confess that... ;)

Anyway back to topic, there is absolutely no benefit in keeping the BIS clear. You can think of it, well, as a built-in storage card...wait I already read that. :rolling:

On the other hand, the main memory MUST by all means stay the clearer you can. The more apps you install on it, the more problems you'll have, and the more soft reset you'll be forced to do. Of course sometimes it's strongly advised to install in main memory (today plugins comes to mind), or even mandatory. But for every other app, don't do it !

Another way to keep it clear is not to use the "My Documents" folder as storage. Or at least use it the less you can. Personally, I created a My Documents folder on the BIS, and almost every app can use it instead of the normal one.

One thing to bare in mind is that the built in backup app doesn't back up BIS (well the version on my X50 doesn't anyway). Not sure about the Active sync backup. So if you are using BIS for data then make sure you have a backup.

'But hang on an min', i here you cry... , 'If BIS survives a hard reset then why do i need a backup of my BIS'....

Well if your axim gets lost, crushed, stolen or soaked..... then how are you going to get the data back?

(that wasn't a nice thought.. I'm going to lie down for a while and hope it never happens)

Good explanation Stone! :approve:
Very clear and perfect for newbies who never used a PDA before. Even with my huge history on PC, I was a bit baffled in the beginning by all those different kind of memory on a PPC... (My Axim is my first one) I would have gain weeks if I have read that at that time!

And for the specific question of fnction22, yes, the "My Documents" folder (or any other one, like "Program Files", but not "Windows" which is in ROM and not the BIS or card folders) are part of this internal memory. When you adjust the sliders, in fact you decide between storage (My Documents / Program Files) and RAM. Try copying a large file in My Documents from your PC, and you'll see the available memory for storage decrease accordingly.
