Hey guys, I downloaded the 40MB ROM update for the Axim 30 but I'm afraid to install it since it told me I might lose everything and if it damages anything I have to send it back and I cant even hard reset. It said even if there is something running on my desktop it may damage the Axim x30.

Has anyone updated the ROM? does it change anything really? Will it look like Axim x50 ROM which is slightly different?

No it will not look like the x50.
It addresses a few bugs, it has a different Media Player version, and a few other minor updates.
I thought it also improved the wireless features but it has been so long since I updated to A05 it is hard to remember.

As for the FEAR of losing everything just backup the units information to a SD card and after you install the update and the hard reset is finished just restore from the backup.
It should all be back good as new.

when doing data backup before ROM update, make sure you choose PIM
after ROM update, you need to delete the partnership on async (to avoid conflict, you can use EXACT same name on axim again), but DO NOT DELETE FILES WHEN DELETING PARTNERSHIP, you can retrive them back once building the standard partnership back
the first sync after ROM update, choose "guest", install apps back one by one, one installation finished, you can use standard partnership (with the name you used)
you can make a text file to put the "bought" software reg code and information, and store onto SD, this'll be handy when you need it
once the standard partnership sync is done, and put the reg info into bought software, it's done

How do I know what ROM version I have? Should I just live with what I have and not fret about doing an upgrade? It's seems a bit complicated to do as I read your instructions. Thanks.

Wowie Zowie Batman..

There has been a whole lot of good answers from this forum and I really appreciate all of your help.

To really sum this up..Do any of you use the IR port on your Axim? If so, how well does it preform for you. Our application will rely very heavily on proper function of the IR data exchange so any feedback will certainly be helpful..
