First, I'd like to say hi to everyone here. Then, I should say that I have just ordered an X30 High from Dell (plus an SD card with 256 megs and the extended battery) and am waiting for it to turn up.
Why the x30? Good question. Well, it got good reviews, it's got a very fast, for a pocket PC, cpu and it's got wi-fi, of which I am a big fan and Bluetooth - but I have no Bluetooth enabled devices - yet. It seems to be very good value for money. And, finally, my old Psion 5mx seems to be eating batteries and I find the screen not that easy to read and the thing is a wee bit too heavy to live in a jacket pocket or be carried in a case around my waist, so I've been using it less and less, poor thing.
Now, time for my first and quite stoopid question. I have a wifi setup at home - D-link access point and it works very well. Now, once I have my nice new PDA, I was wondering whether it would be possible for me to connect to it wirelessly from my Laptop and drag and drop files to the Axim. I guess I'll have to extend my wireless network set up and I'm sure I can get the Axim to connect to the www via the AP, but not so sure about connecting it to my PC.
If this is possible and someone has done it, I'd like to hear from them. My networking skills are not that hot, but I do know about SSID profiles, and MAC addresses and the like. Connecting one PC was easy, but I'm not sure about PC plus PDA.
Any comments?
As for uses, I'm going to use the thing for scheduling courses and lessons and other PIM stuff, keeping pdf copies of invoices for quick reference, storing info about classroom activities and potentially as a way of displaying what we teachers call 'flash cards' - basically an image. I teach English and images do seem to help people to remember words more easily. In addition, I want to be able to check e-mails without having to fire up the laptop and maybe do a little web surfing. I'm sure I'll come up with a few more uses once I am more familiar with the thing.

Welcome to Aximsite, Alexim. You can't drag/drop files in the same way as you can PC to PC, but you can access network drives from your device. When you get your X30, try Resco Explorer or Total Commander (freeware). I've found these file explorers to be the easiest to access network shares.
Yep, bootup is pretty instant. That's how Pocket PCs work; they are always receiving some power, even when powered OFF. When there is a total power loss, a hard reset occurs and you will lose everything you've installed/saved in Main Memory. (Built-in-storage and memory cards remain untouched.)
Psions are great, and all Psion users are clearly wonderfull people :approve:
If you miss the keyboard too much you can get Bluetooth foldable ones, I haven't got one yet but if i find some spare cash

"Psions are great, and all Psion users are clearly wonderfull people" - Yes we are :approve:
I will probably miss the keyboard, but since I've had a laptop, I've found that I've not been using the Psion so much - possibly because the laptop is pretty portable, if not as convenient as the Psion, seeing as it's much bigger. I suppose I used the Psion as a sort of mini laptop equivalent. I still reckon that something similar to the 5mx would be great if it had a colour screen, was a bit thinner and lighter and came with a keyboard which is as good as the Psion's.
I nearly went for the Bluetooth keyboard - which is cheaper when you get it at the same time as the Axim, but I decided to wait and see and went for the bigger battery and memory instead - if I want to write anything long - I'll do it on the PC and send it to the Axim.
Can't wait to wander around with the Axim and see how many unprotected wireless networks there are - not that I intend to hack into any of them - you can get yourself in deep doggy poo doing such things.
