Browsing your Desktop pc files from your x3

I have searched through the forums with many different search terms and still couldn't seem to find the answer to my question. I have my x3 base station near my bed and acitvesync'd to my desktop. (hopefully this isn't a painfully obvious answer) I did this in hopes I would be able to stream media without crashing my wireless network, and in hopes it would be faster. However, in my adventures I haven't figured out a way to get access to my desktop pc's files without them being shared over the wireless network. I guess my question is, is there a way to get access to all my desktop's files using my x3 and active sync instead of wireless, or bluetooth?

Welcome to aximsite. If you want to stream media, you need a fast connection (e.g. at least wireless). If you just want to use active sync (via a wired usb cable), all I can think of is 'terminal service'. But again, without wireless, it might be very slow.

I think the answer is in your post, unless I'm missing something. If you don't want to use Wifi or BT, then you would have to use the cradle right? Unless you wanted to use IrDA.
How else could you connect?

Why do you not want to use Wifi or BT? Assuming that there is a compelling reason not to use them, why not use the cradle?

we have wds's (wireless distro. systems) 3 routers, one in each room working together as one, unfortunatley linksys hasn't really ran through the hard trials with this, so streams will drop if I am doing it from a computer, and movies are damn near impossible. So while I was in bed, I was just going to use my desktop computer as the media storage device and pick and choose what I wanted to watch, but I dont' know how to get access to my pc's files. It seems as though it is really slow through active sync, and I haven't really worked with bluetooh, I was hopeing I could keep it wired.

Has anyone ever looked into the sd ethernet cards? perhaps that is a fast option without using wireless?

Well, using Resco Explorer requires a connection to your network, so I don't think that's what you are looking for...You could find out the port that Activesync/Streaming music uses, and then tell all routers to forward anything using those ports to your PDA's IP address...

I was thinking of buying another router, that would just broadcast another wireless network from my network in my room, and I coudl just connnect to that, so there weren't any hops in my house that weren't necessary <sp>

That would work just fine for you. Just get a cheap wireless B router, not wireless G. The Axim only uses B so it's useless to pay the extra cash for 108.11G.

Are you actually streaming the content or just trying to open it over the network? If you're just trying to open it over the network then that's probably your problem. There is NO WAY that your Axim is maxing out either an 802.11b or 802.11g network. So it's unlikely that just throwing another router at it will fix the problem. It's not impossible, I don't have a good enough understanding of how you have things setup, but it's not the right approach to solving the problem.

Assuming that you are streaming it, have you change the bit rates to see if there is a way to optimize that way? Assuming that you're not streaming it, have you though about streaming it? Slim Server is fantastic for streaming audio and Windows Media Encoder is not bad for streaming video. Both are free.

You are right howard, I will look into the streaming options that let me control the rates. I was just trying to stream it over the network, it seems to work well enough with mp3s and even some video files, but it was cutting out, so I assumed it was my router being dumb. I will have to find some tutorials, I have played with the windows encoder before, but it was giveing me troubles, because I dont' know how to use it.
