Active Sync with Bluetooth Phone

I am struggling with Active sync when using my cell phone for connectivity. I commonly sync with my work computer. Everything works fine from home and hot spots that provide wireless connectivity. I use a VPN to get through the company firewall. Occassionally I need to check email when I do not have access to WiFi. Both my Axim and cell phone support bluetooth. I also can use Verizon to connect to the internet. In theory, I should be able to connect over this connection even though it is a very slow connection. It does not work, reliably. It will dial in to Verizion, connect to the VPN, then wait some time and disconnect. One time I got it to work when I had iniated connection to the internet before hitting active sync. I have repeated that process and not been successful again. It appears that the system just times out and disconnects. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
