I am new to the PDA scene and I want to b able to access the internet while Im away. I want to be able to check my mail, check this site:D and use MSN MEssenger and Aol Instant MEssanger (Does any body have a link for that program AIM?). Now how would i COnnect to the Internet. Do i use my exsisting Isp or to I have to sign up for something. Is the Internet at least 28.8 kps spped? Well anybody with any info would b helpful
also, didn't mean to ignore your other questions but I'd rather someone else with more experience answer your connection questions...there are a few possibilities to access the net with your axim....I started out by reading the manual (page 101) and then checked the forums. I don't know what kind of connection you would be interested in (modem, wireless???) Yes, you can use your home ISP.
DUH...okay...I see the CF MODEM right at the top of you post...silly me :)
well i was planning on using a modem because i often stay at my grandparents house or friends house who dont have computer yet. lol they should! but anyways yes i would most likely use a modem card, and also i will too go check my manuel. Also has anybody used Aim, is it a good program?
Also, should i update my rom version for better success with Pocket IE? I currently only have A00 and am happy with it. BUt if the internet runs bad like i have heard, should i update? Is it really that tough?
don't quote me on this but I think you already have the latest version of rom on you Axim...the update says A03 but, after it's installed, it shows up on your device as A00. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. Plus, there are a few posts about the update in the forums. You can do a search in the forums at the top of the page. Personally, I wasn't having problems with my Axim so I didn't do the update. It's working fine for me and I don't want to take the chance with doing the update.
I have a CF modem for sale in the Classified forum if you're interested. Just let me know. From what I remember, it was a breeze to set up and I was online within minutes using my Earthlink ISP. But, I've decided to go wireless and I don't need the CF modem anymore.
As for AIM...there are two types. You can purchase a version at handango.com for $19-$20. Check Handango for the details as there might be a difference from the free one that is offered here in the Downloads section. I've been meaning to download the one here on this site but, I haven't gone wireless yet, so there is no rush for me to get it.
I just did a little more reading...go to the FAQ at the top of the screen (or bottom) and in there is a guide for doing the update to A03. Seems as if I was wrong in my above post...A00 is not the latest (I thought I had read somewhere that it showed up as A00 but, I guess not)
see the post below :) thank goodness for the MODS :)
ok well i have decided i will buy a cf modem. I only have one more question. My internet at my grandparents house runs about 31 to 33 kps and will the targus take a long time to connect. Should i just spen the extra money and get the socket? What are the pros and cons of each thank everyone
I'm seeing the Targus 56K modem on EBay for around $40. Is that a good price and a good modem? I, too, am a newbie, and would like to think I could leave my laptop at home and check and respond to e-mails with the Axim. I HATE lugging around my Inspiron 8100!

Got it for $20 after rebates from CompUSA last month. It seems good enough, although it does not have auto-fall-back for its connection speeds if the line quality is low. If you suspect you have a bad line you have to "manually" try slower speeds until you get a reliable connection.
the Targus modem on Ebay is a ripoff for $40....I don't know if the CompUSA price is still valid but, I did see this recently on Amazon for 29.99. Do a little more looking around, you'll find it cheaper than $40.
Got mine Thursday night and it was $29.99. They had them hid in the back and only the Ambicom $75 dollar bad boys were on the shelf. I think I will like the Targus just fine.
I finally broke down and bought the targus modem. Actually I am using it right now. I am very pleased with it. It does what I need. Although it is a little hard to read websites using Pocket Internet Explorer. For the price, this modem outshines all the others! Also,I upgraded to AO3 and am very happy with the results. although I dont see any differences in pocket Internet explorer.
