I have a Nikon 4300...
its 4 mega Pixels and takes Gorgeous pics. A little pricey at $450 but it does use CF cards which I have Many. Then I can put on Axim direct if I want to.

Well, guys here is how it happened last night...
I was sitting their at 10 oclock ready to push the button. I was torn between the 2100 coolpix and the canon a60. I chose the A60 because it had a movie with sound function, and i was all ready. With my discounts it came to 195 bucks for that camera with shipping! But...
I couldnt do it. When i make a purchase like that, i need to feel really good about. I am in college and dont exactly have lots of funds. My axim was a great purchase and when i got it i knew i would put it to good use. But i just didnt feel the same about this purchase. So I quickly came to my second home (this site) and posted my coupon code so someone else might be able to use it. And that ended my search. I am still looking, but i dont know if anything will beat that price for a long time. Thanks for the help guys, it really helped.

From what I've read, both of those cameras are good. I personally wouldn't worry about the video and sound since it really isn't that great. I never use it on mine. :shurg:
That said, you can't go wrong with either camera. The Nikon might take better pictures, but the Canon has a ton of features. Keep up updated with what you get and give us a small review on it. :D

I researched a number of digicams before I bought mine. I checked out the Nikon CoolPix and it had too much plastic JUNK. But it looked cute...but how cute would it be when the plastic stuff was broken? I checked out various Sonys, but didn't like the proprietary memory stick. I decided fairly early on (way before Axim came out) that I wanted a cam w/ cf or sd card storage. I didn't like the resolution of HP cameras or Kodak even at the higher megapixel range.
Anyway, after much looking, handling, checking features and prices, I decided on the Canon S40 w/ 4 megapixels. It is a great, SMALL camera and easy to use w/ tons of features. And, of course, at 4 mp, it takes excellent pix. Can't recommend it highly enough...but it's cost is a little more than the price range you mentioned. Canon's optics are terrific and durability and function are amazing. My husband is still using (and loves) his 25 or 30 year old Canon AE1 35mm. camera. It takes totally amazing pix yet!!
Just MHO, but I love the Canon S40!!

I'm also in the market to purchase a digital camera and was looking at buy.com's prices (still shopping around). Another review site you might be interested in:

I have a coolpix 4500 also. GREAT camera IMO....
I'm using Resco PictureViewer 4.0.... Much better than the OEM version that comes with the Axim...
http://www.resco-net.com/picview.asp
It does a really good job of browsing the CF Card.

well, I ended up getting the Canon A60...looks like a good beginner's camera, which is what I need. I realize some of you have been using digital cameras for a while now and, I know I'll sound like a total newbie for saying this but, I hope it doesn't take too long for me to figure out how to take a decent picture. To give you an idea of where I'm coming from...my last camera was one of those 'one time use' cameras I got at a wedding...infact, I think it's still sitting in my junk drawer...I never even took it in to get developed....oh, and that hassle is now gone too with this new camera :)
Cagey...I did take a look at that 4500....now that is a sweet camera!! And, thanks for the link on Resco...that would have been the next thing I was going to look for on this site :)

I use a Kodak DX4330 easy share. It uses SD Cards and it is easy to quickly view the pictures on the ax 30 seconds later on the larger screen. It's a toy I got at Target for about $250.00 last X-mas. It also does movies w/sound. Oh, Picture quality is great. My brother-in-law went to brooks and was really impressed with the image I sent him last week.

I found a Toshiba PDR-3300 for 200.00 (bought from ebay, new in box non-refurb). It's 3mp with both optical and digital zoom plus lots of other features. Takes an SD card (64 meg card included from seller I found) and doesn't take propietary batteries. My friend works at Costco Photo Dept and recomended this as a great camera for the price (retails at Costco for 249.00).Haven't received yet, will let you know how it works with the Axim. But the pix looked nice on the one I tried out at Costco...
PS. noticed that Resco Pic Viewer will browse for CF, can I set it up to browse for SD?

i second the toshiba pdr's, (or third, i'm not sure how many people liked it) for the price, it's a great camera. However, check out the toshiba pdr 3330, at tigerdirect, a refurb with mail in rebate is only $149. Not bad for a decent 3megapixel camera. Mine takes beautiful pics outside, and okay pics in low light. With the flash it's fine, but I like low light without flash. Anyway, that's a pretty common problem with digi cams, so nothing to get upset about, and i can't complain about the price. My refurb also came with a 32mb SD card instead of the usual 8mb, probably just a mistake, but still, made me smile! 32 is actually usuable, as a second card at least.
