I was just handed down an x5. without any cables
how do I know if I can us a cradle or do I have to get the sync/charger cables sep. also what is the output voltage and polarity for the charger cable ( inside +,outsid-) is this correct If so I might have a plug to fit but I need to know the voltage and amps needed.
where can I get these cables- from a good online store.

You can use a cradle or a separate USB/sync cable. In fact the 300mhz units came with just a sync cable while the 400mhz units came with a cradle.

Lots of cables, cradles and chargers are available on ebay. My charger says it puts out 5.5V, whereas other PDA's such as hp iPAQ's are typically 5V.

You can buy generic chargers at places like RadioShack and Fry's. Radioshack has chargers and plugs separate, so you buy a charger that will put out the right voltage, then buy the appropriate plug. Fry's has generic chargers that come with a whole bunch of plugs. Most chargers seem to have settings for 4.5V or 5V and not 5.5V. IIRC what you want is a 4mm plug.

but since I can't turn the unit on yet how can I tell if i have the 300mhz or 400mhz
under the batt it says Model no HC01U but it doesnt say the clock speed.
can I just get a generic sync cable-- will that charge my unit also- the guy at DELL said it would not charge the unit. but on diff web sites they advertise that the sync cable DOES charge the unit. any ideas-- I really want to start using this for school ( nursing program )

Regardless of what they are 'supplied with,' both models work with either the cradle or cable.

There's a pretty wide range of quality in the aftermarket cables and some users had problems synching and/or charging with some of the cheaper ones. BTW, charging with just the USB cable can be problematic even with a good cable since many PC's USBs put out less power than the Axim uses.

I have both 300 and 400, the cradles are same.

If you want original cradle, you should find them at eBay.

You also can buy charge/sync cable, but cradle is better.

I use cradle at home and charge/sync cable when I travel.

I did get the unit powered up it is a 400mhz.
